The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 If I'm Ross, I'm going balls to the wall for Paddack Stroman + Giles?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 I find it really hard to believe Harper doesn't end up in Philly.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 hard to imagine the Padres trading Paddack for Stroman. Well obviously. Jays have a few pieces the Padres could use, Pillar, Giles, Stroman etc.
Frag Verified Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Looking at Steamer's projections for 2019 (which includes free agents), the Padres are expected to win about 81 games even after signing Machado. Unless they make more significant adds via free agency or trades, I'm guessing their outlook is more 2020, when their prospects develop further.

If they do meet or exceed that total...it wouldn't be a tough sales job to sell 2020 season tickets considering what is coming up through the system. Then there is the fact that they are projected to win 81 without a significant contribution from Tatis, Allen, Quantrill, Meija and Paddack (combined projection of 3.9 fWAR), it's not out of the question that those 5 put up 10 wins. They also own 20% of Fox Sports San Diego which every team they cover is losing it seems. So building this hype can really change the franchise around. It's the Padres so more likely Tatis dies in a car crash, Meija retires in his honour, with Allen, Quantrill and Paddack having their arms fall off carrying the casket. Machado falls out of favour with the fans when he doesn't hustle on FTJ memorial day.

The opposite would maybe be something like the 2014 or 2017 Blue Jays, where the core team might be good on paper but a severe lack of quality depth means that the downwards variance is pretty real. The Padres have an interesting problem with their farm, where they basically might have too many prospects to use internally. They kind of have to trade prospects. Honestly a Stroman deal makes so much sense. San Diego has pitching depth but probably needs someone with experience who can maybe be a solid #3 or a bit more. Any projected win that SD adds for 2019 has pretty massive value at this point; trading for Stroman probably increases their projection to 83 wins, at which point they are just one breakout away from the playoffs.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Padres have a s***-ton of pitching talent on the farm. Probably going after Machado a bit early, but they have him for 10 years, so he'll be there for a good chunk of the glory days

Probably going after Machado a bit early, but they have him for 10 years, so he'll be there for a good chunk of the glory days TBF it’s not like an elite 26 year old infielder is available in free agency every year, so it’s not likely that they could have acquired a comparable alternative in a year or two.
