BTS Community Moderator Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 The Astros broadcast just brought up a graphic explaining what xFIP is and they are discussing how Gerrit Cole's ERA is a lot higher than his FIP and xFIP and doesn't really reflect how good he's been. We have Buck and Pat.

We have Buck and Pat. The Astros broadcast has always been ahead of the game in showing some of the more advanced stats and giving a decent explanation for them, I remember a WAR graphic a few years back. I believe the Rays have done the same. It's frankly embarrassing that we employ Buck and Pat and make zero attempt towards an effort to increase the knowledge of our general fanbase.

Yeah, the Asros and Rays broadcasts are two of the best in the business. It's on a completely different level than what our fans are exposed to with Buck and Pat.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 It's frankly embarrassing that we employ Buck and Pat and make zero attempt towards an effort to increase the knowledge of our general fanbase. It's worse than that, they actively try to discredit advanced stats.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 John Gant showing some filthy stuff out of the bullpen. Two-seamer at 97-98 with crazy movement, a huge overhand curveball and a nasty splitter/changeup with absurd drop.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Please stop posting anything from Sheryl Ring Thank you Yeah, it only plays into "her" hand. Sorta like when Libertarian types ramble on every time AOC says something retarded. Only gives them a spotlight and a more powerful voice.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 They should partner Buck up with a new-school kind of guy. Strike a bit of a balance. They try to do that with Dan who likes to bring up some of the more advanced stuff from time to time but Buck dismisses it every time and just continues blabbering on. When it's Buck and Pat though it's just unbearable.

We have Buck and Pat. Whenever I bring up the suggestion that we retain some non-dinosaurs who could start to introduce casuals to advanced stats I get told that fans don't want that - the want stories (whether coherent or not) and people saying they like Buck. Please let us follow the Astros/Rays lead. I f***ing hate these 2 twits.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 I think the tides starting to turn though. They show WAR on the back of baseball cards now along with some other advanced stats and I bought one of those Lindy's baseball preview magazines and they focused heavily on the advanced stats. Never would've seen that 5-10 years ago.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Joey Gallo hit another mammoth blast. This pushes his career homeruns to singles ratio to an impressive 98:90. Truly a player of extremes.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Pitches per plate appearance! Yeah, but if I remember right they had to ask if that stat existed before being told it did and providing it.

WAR isn't an official stat, I've said it before but it'd be an interesting step if MLB endorsed one methodology and started using it officially. There would then be more chance of it being quoted regularly by broadcast teams IMO.

Probably end up using WARP which nobody but the inventor of that stat still uses.

Can you imagine Buck and Pat’s analysis? “So Pat this year we’re incorporating WAR in our graphics, what do you think” “I have no idea where WAR comes froms” “I agree, in my day all you needed to know was your batting average and RBI total”

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Not sure if this was posted but it's worth a discussion if not. For the first time in like 50 years have starters posted a lower ERA than relievers in a month. 4.34 for starters and 4.39 for relievers.
