Can we close all the 2019 threads and make new threads for the upcoming year now please? Yay

I would love for this board to be more topic specific with new threads as well. No need for a thread several thousand replies long.

Just my 2 cents...(and I am 100% correct in case anyone was curious...)

Agreed. The board would likely be much more active if everything didn't get buried in the Around Baseball and General Jays Discussion threads.

How in the f*** is Bass still Arb Eligible? Fun fact he's the only player drafted out of my school (can I call it Alumni when I dropped out?). Solid enough move.

You're right. That is fun.

Unlikely IMO. We’d just have loads of threads with a few comments in each. We don’t have a big enough community of posters right now to sustain a reddit style new thread for every conversation.

Wouldn't everything instead just get buried in the Off-season thread? We will close this one when we open the 2020 thread. There is protocol we have to follow

That's a long term cultural issue. It would be great if there are more threads. Even silly threads sometimes... then the people can decide. Popular threads will rise to the top. Stupid threads will be buried.

However, this site, as any enterprise should be, is ruled by those who have contributed financially or administratively. It is their right to mold the site into a form that pleases them.

I believe the site could attract more people, with a different culture... however those who rule may not want more people.

I remember a while back some guy posted something like "Hey... looking for a Jays board. Trying out a few. Just interested in what's going on here"

then a few days later

"Hey. Decided on another board. Looks like you guys have your own thing going on here. That's cool but not quite what I'm looking for"

Can't remember exactly where it was... but it was funny.

And he's gone:

I'd be quite happy with more people, but not at the expense of changing the "culture" here.

If I (and, I guess, others) stopped saying s*** like "MOTHERf***ING COCKBAG UMPIRES SHOULD EAT s*** AND DIE WHILE THEIR FAMILIES WATCH" we could probably be more of a 'family friendly' kinda place, but that's not a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Putting the work in, good to see.

His diet is going to be the real kicker though - will he break the bad habits of a lifetime? FWIW he still looks fat in the videos. Even so, an encouraging start.

He'll be noticeably slimmer by February

Maybe. And then by August he’ll be fat again.

Apr. VGJ WAR in 4 scenarios

Fat - bad launch angle - 0.5

Skinny - bad launch angle - 1.5

Fat - good launch angle - 5.0

Skinny - good launch angle - 6.0

Assumptions - Skinny Vlad gains 1+ WAR for baserunning and defense.

Assumptions - Launch Angle Vlad gains 4 or 5 WAR for hitting.

Reference - Miguel Cabrera fangraphs page, particularly 2003-2016 era, compared to 2017-2019. Plenty of fatness and bad baserunning most of the time, but can get 5 or 6 WAR with good hitting.

Yeah his fitness is a borderline non-story.

Even if Vlad got in great shape (not likely), he'll still have that fat ass. He's not going to be able to change his body type. There is no athleticism miracle coming. It's more about preventing long-term breakdown for him. He needs to avoid ballooning.

I concede that maybe his fat stomach, changes the swing a bit, and makes it harder to launch... if so then getting rid of the fatness may help a lot...

On the other hand, what it, instead of putting so much effort into nutrition and fitness, they put all that effort into swing mechanics and launch angle ??

Don't get me wrong... a little nutrition and fitness... but instead of the fatness watch, he gets to enjoy his life, enjoy grammas cooking... maintain himself at 260...

But every day he is taking batting practice, with the greatest hitting coach's the Jays can find, with 100 sensors in his bat, analyzing everything.

They assign a team of experts to analyze all of Jayson Heywards career at bats, and figure out why he could never solve his problems.

They assign a team of experts to analyze the swings of the great fatties of all time, the Fielders... Cabrera..

Would 3/50 ish gotten it done for odorizzi?

Who was on board for that ?

Not me. We already have number 3, 4, 5 pitchers in our system. Odorizzi isn't a number 1 or 2 and without those the Jays are a fourth place team. Our Farm is now a bottom half to bottom third system as all the better players are now on the major league roster. So a weak farm, no ace or even a # 2 starter - a bullpen with ONE true shutdown arm we're looking to trade for a middling prospect or two. And basically three players who look like they can be good hitters. I understand signing quality number 3 pitchers to stabilize the rotation but we're not winning jack squat for 3 years so why give up draft pick compensation for 3 losing years?

You give up the #2 pick if you're a 95 win team and you think he can put you over the top but throwing away a high pick for a solid #3 - meh.
