You don't rebuild in a year, so when do you start, what's the model, Jim?

RIDICULOUS!

You start now.

So you agree with Boxy then, BJs make playoffs if they sign Cole, Roark, Moose.

Or is it a ridiculous assertion.

Oh, so you agree with me, my bad, I didn't look at his post. I think there would be a chance, but I don't want Moose, for the simple fact they're not taking Vlad off 3B, maybe Abreu at 1B... :P

Gerrit Cole is going to be 30 next year, going to be 35, 5 years later, and 40, 5 years after that. And so on and so forth. Hard pass!

lol... wtf???

Interesting discussion guys, and yeah I doubt he would ultimately sign here. However I still think it would be a relief to hear that the Jays were in on him heavy, would let us know that the FO is at least willing to try and sign big name free agents as the team progresses to hopefully contenders.

Discussion started by your question, which I backed by the way. ;)

They need to start building around these guys now.

I think you need a lot more than that. We're 30 games behind Wild Card teams who have somewhat sustainable short-term cores in place and don't look ready to experience a huge decline next year (OAK, TB, CLE).

We're talking a jump from 65 wins to 95 wins lol. Roark and Moose are in their 30's. They could give you like 2 WAR combined next year and no one would be surprised.

Yeah, it would be really tough without adding, they're not going to go bank in one offseason. :P

I have been saying for months now BJs need to start making strategic additions through FA to build a future contender, in part to improve the on field product and start bringing back the fans.

But to the extent of trying to build a legit 2020 contender? That would be ridiculous.

They can make moves where we'd be building whilst being a dark horse for a WC spot, it's not ridiculous... we'll see come this winter.

When our next podcast goes up, take a listen to my soothing voice as I make a case for the 2020 Jays based on numbers.

I eagerly anticipate it

Our off season

Sign back Smoak to DH/mentor

Move Vladdy to 1st

Get a platoon mate for Drury at 3rd

Choose a CF that can play+ defense and hit a bit other than Pillar

Need a bunch of pieces in the pen and SP

Clean out McKinney, Tellez, Maile, Hernandez, Panonne, Devon Travis, Bucholtz, Adam, Boshers, Stewart, Waguespack. And spend some $$$ replacing them. I always relate it to would i like to see them play when I am at the stadium live. And for these guys it is no. These guys are neither good or prospects.

See what you can get for Giles as our only asset of value approaching 30 years old which says a lot.

This roster as assembled not counting Vladdy, Biggio, our cathers and The Mullet are embarrasing.

And I will take a new GM while you are at it thanks. Who will also bring in his own manager with a little bit more bite.

That is all......

Would be really interesting if we know what the approx payroll would be next year. Hard to speculate on The best FA signings without that.

That said, I’m more in the favor of spending on 3 Lesser tier pitchers than 32 on cole. We have that many holes in rotation.

At least 5 of those guy's have options, why chuck them away? Unless your worried about the 40 man. Actually, this post is embarrassing. NVM.

I'd really like to look at bringing Brett Gardener in on a 1 yr deal if the Yankees don't bring him back. His defense alone would pay for his contract.

Hard to take someone seriously when they don't even know what a mullet is.

And you want to replace 11 players and "spend money" on their replacements? So... what... $150M on middle relief?

Seeing some FA names thrown out.

In terms of strategic signings, the Jays should be doing one or both of:

- sign lower level free agents to 1 year deals with the hope they have a bounceback season and can be moved for younger assets

- sign top level free agents to longer term deals, guys that will still be here when the Jays are at the peak of the win curve

f*** the signing mid tier free agents to 2-3 deals, the risk vs. potential payoff is not there

I wouldn't want to rely on defense paying for a contract for someone his age. That said, he might be worth kicking the tires on.

I'm presenting a numbers argument. What's yours?

No you aren't. You said with certainty that Cole, Roark, and Moose mean the playoffs in 2020. Hey it could happen, but the probability is far lower than the certainty you claim.

I'd be happy to bring him in just to blast the umps. The guy is entertaining.

Based on run differential Jays win 71 games this year. Add 10 WAR for the three newcomers replacing three replacement level shitbags. A full season of the young guys adds 5 WAR. You're up to 86 wins right there which in a normal year is in the thick of contention.

For whatever it's worth:

1st half: 4.79 xFIP, 85 wRC+, 34-57 record

2nd half: 5.07 xFIP, 98 wRC+, 30-37 record

That's a pretty big improvement as is. Two good starting pitchers would make a world of difference.

What are you going to be more disappointed about, not getting cole, or not making a real effort to sign him?

Agreed - may not be enough in 2020 - but it's a step in the right direction - if you think that Jays have a real chance in 2021 - it might make sense to extend Ken Giles. Elite pitching isn't easy to come by. And if the Yankees don't win the WS this year you probably have to ask why they didn't acquire elite arms.

The Jays will have bucket loads of cash this off season and next. So....

That 2nd half wRC+ is still only good enough for 13th. Yes our pitching is terrible, but we need a lot more than 2 starters to turn this team around.
