L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Atkins always says the things you’d like to hear (development, depth, work ethic, strong farm, etc) but eventually results need to follow. I’ve been a strong supporter so far, but next year will be interesting. There will likely be pressure from ownership to not be one of the worst teams in baseball, and still a lot of questions marks up and down the 40 man. It would be nice to see them acquire some ML talent in exchange for eating a bad contract which could help expedite the rebuild. I don’t want to be hoping for a top 5 pick again in a years time.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Isn't that like most execs? Yes and no. Most GMs wouldn't answer a question like this. “Really, it’s just been our overall ability to prevent runs and score them."
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 God damn.. some people are just relentlessly negative. What the f*** are you talking about? Did I say something was wrong with it? I was just surprised they rolled with Vlad despite his limited homerun total.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 So should rookies never be in the home run derby? None of them will ever have high career home run totals. Not what I meant. Was just surprised they took Vlad. Its not usually what they do. They seem more interested in getting guys who will put on batting practice display this year over guys with the homerun numbers but barely get it over the fence.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Jays are excited Vladdy is headed to the HR Derby to further enhance tank nation. Guys turn into pumpkins after competing.

You're surprised they took the number one prospect in baseball? A guy who has entered every homerun contest he's had an opportunity to?

With his numbers so far? Shocked actually. He has plenty of Homerun Derbys ahead of him. Glad he’s participating. Something to look forward to.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Apologies, I guess I read something into that wasn’t there. All good man. I would hope people wouldn’t actually think I don’t want him in the derby. I was borderline probably not going to watch it. Now I’m excited for it.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Sogard has been shockingly surprisingly impressive. Just under 2 WAR 137 wRC+. Hot, cold and hot again. 250 PAs. More than I ever expected from him. He has done a nice job helping out a really bad team.

He has done a nice job helping out a really bad team 206 PA's according to BR: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sogarer01.shtml Unfortunately he needs 502 PA's to qualify for the batting title race, and I dont think he'll get there

Based on his launch angles and exit velocities the guy 'should' be hitting .272 and slugging .375 for a roughly league average batting line (source: BaseballSavant). Not bad, but he's been very lucky.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 I'd rather bring him back for a year or two say 2/6 then trade him for a nothing prospect But you’ll get a prospect And open up more playing time for Bichette and Biggio at the same time. If the prospect is anything between Santiago Espinal, Forrest Wall, or Trent Thornton, Julian Merryweather I’ll take it. I like Sogard, but 2020/2021 should be the priority, and who knows if he can hit like this next year. Projections say no.

It would be a lot different story if he was 24 or 25 years old
Ray Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 I really don’t think we’d be looking at a Merryweather/Thornton return for Sogard. Merrweather was traded for a former MVP, and Thornton was traded for 2 WAR shortstop with 4 years of control. We’d probably be looking at a Forrest Wall/Harold Ramirez/Santiago Espinal/Andrew Sopko AA lottery ticket type.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Merryweather wasn’t highly rated, and Thornton was outside Astro’s top 10. And still doesn’t get love from Houston fans. Those guys were basically “Forrest Wall” caliber return for pitching. Some upside, maybe one or two plus tools. Fringe MLB but has potential to be more. Just looking at how front office dumped Loup, Axford, Oh, Granderson, Pearce there’s a good chance Sogard is on the list to be flipped if his production continues into July. The return might not be great but you never know, Merryweather looked bad at the time.
43211234 Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 You'll get next to nothing for Sogard. I doubt any team believes he won't turn into a pumpkin. Maybe you get a Waguespack type player
Ex Player Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Maybe you get a Waguespack type player That may turn out to be a good trade though, considering Nerd is 33 years old. If he was a a decade younger I probably wouldnt trade him
Ex Player Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Vladdie misses an 86mph floater right down broadway?? Come on now
Ex Player Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 BOOM!!!! And just like that its a 2-run game

Ex Player Verified Member Posted June 22, 2019 Posted June 22, 2019 Vladdie is being outpitched with offspeed pitches right now. He needs to shorten up his swing (EDIT: also get rid of the dreadlocks please)

Now, he could completely change that around should he show this same stuff that we're all hearing whispers of, in game. But until i actually see something tangible from him, that's a piss poor return to Josh f***ing Donaldson.

He needs to shorten up his swing (EDIT: also get rid of the dreadlocks please) His swing isnt long it's just slow and not as agressive since being hit on his hand. Last two games have been much better including crushing an offspeed pitch 115 mph

What a f***ing disaster Atkins is.
