L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Groshans was discussed as a mid to late 1st or early 2nd rounder. Certainly not a 1st. Warmoth was definitely all over mocks, like metafour pointed out. Pearson not nearly to the same extent but yes, I'm not denying that he was on some Jays' previous draft lists. Yet the actual point remains, every year, mocks are woefully inaccurate and emotions run high every single year, despite which players the Jay's are linked to. Me originally telling people to calm themselves if players they want picked don't. That does not affect me other than an eyeroll. However, you deciding to respond like a total snarky douche to my original post made me understandably more aggressive. Being the one who sits back and chimes in that the draft isn’t going to go the way XY&Z mocked it is the ultimate fence sitter stance. Congratulations
jmomcc Verified Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 I’m sorry you’re offended that I’m calling you out for taking the easiest stance on the draft possible What’s douchey is guys who have no clue about the draft being the ones who think they need to forewarn everybody that the mock drafts aren’t going to play out as the projections. Well no s***, thanks for the heads up Oh god, so much this. Saying that mock drafts are inaccurate doesn't make you some all knowing sage.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Thanks. I'm pretty proud of taking a rational view.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Moreso than the mocks, I'd love to see how well the post draft rankings have done in the past. They pretty much just say "these teams most drafted by our rankings".
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 This one is amazing. Our good friends Bleacher report 2015 MLB Draft Grades Team Grade Note Arizona Diamondbacks B In need of a big-time playmaker, Dansby Swanson is their man. Atlanta Braves B Selected 11 pitchers out of 13 possible picks. Baltimore Orioles A- D.J. Stewart will become best OF prospect within two years. Boston Red Sox B- Andrew Benintendi will be a great talent one day, but the Sox needed pitching. Chicago Cubs B An extremely deep farm system just got deeper. Short on pitching prospects. Chicago White Sox B+ Pitching needed, pitching drafted. Carson Fulmer will be a very solid righty. Cincinnati Reds C+ With Devin Mesoraco developing into one of the best catchers in the MLB, why take a catcher at No. 8? Cleveland Indians A- The Indians might have gotten the steal of the draft by getting last year's top pick, pitcher Brady Aiken at No. 17. Colorado Rockies A With Tulo possibly on the way out, Brendan Rodgers will be his successor. A very good one. Detroit Tigers A- Beau Burrows and Tyler Alexander will help the Tigers, especially if they lose David Price. Houston Astros A The Astros got the second-best player in the draft at No. 2 with LSU SS Alex Bregman. Kansas City Royals B- Royals could have used one of two first-round picks to get an outfielder they will need very soon. Los Angeles Angels C+ Taylor Ward will be the starting catcher one day, but they did not address the middle infield situation. Los Angeles Dodgers A- The Dodgers need to develop depth in their farm system. This draft was a decent start. Miami Marlins B- Brett Lilek is just one piece of a rotation puzzle the Marlins are trying to put together. Milwaukee Brewers B+ Taking three pitchers in the first three rounds for a farm system with no arms is just what Milwaukee needed. Minnesota Twins B Tyler Jay had one of the lowest ERA's in the nation at Illinois. New York Mets C+ Without a pick until No. 53, the Mets were strapped to address their lack of offensive talent. New York Yankees B+ The Yankees needed starting pitching. The Yankees drafted starting pitching. Three arms taken in the first three rounds. Oakland Athletics C Taking two shortstops in the first two rounds won't help the outfield. Philadelphia Phillies B- The Phillies need a lot of help. Especially with pitching. They took two shortstops in the first three rounds. Pittsburgh Pirates A Kevin Newman will be the Pirates starting shortstop within two years. San Diego Padres C+ Not picking until 51 hurt the Padres chances to find an impact arm. San Francisco Giants D+ The Giants needed outfielders. They have no MLB outfield talent in the minors. They took arms and infielders in the first three rounds. Seattle Mariners B- Looking for help for Felix Hernandez in the future, the Mariners grabbed a pair of right-handers within 12 picks in the second round. St. Louis Cardinals B The Cardinals always find a way to mold whoever they draft into serviceable professionals. It will be no different with Nick Plummer. (Fun Note here...it was 3 through 5th rounds that the Cards got 4 players which have already made the majors) Tampa Bay Rays A- Tampa nabbed one of the best outfield prospects in Garrett Whitley. (J4L Texas Rangers B+ Despite missing out on good middle infield prospects, the Rangers picked a future No. 1 starter in Dillon Tate. Toronto Blue Jays A- The Blue Jays might have a dark horse by picking RHP Jon Harris out of Missouri State. Washington Nationals B Andrew Stevenson will anchor a Nationals outfield one day, but pitching was needed. Steals of the draft Daz Cameron, OF Brady Aiken, P
jmomcc Verified Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 I would say something about draft coverage, in that I'm way more interested in scout's feelings about draftees than their mock draft projections. That's why fangraphs is so good in that they incorporate draftees unto their board and their FV system gives you an idea of how good a prospect is compared to ones already in the pro game. I'd love if they also did personal lists but still pretty good.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 I like certain profiles, and in turn hate certain profiles. I hate "freak athlete, who will develop power over time" I like "makes great contact and hits everything on a line" I like "profiles to be one of the best bats but has no position". I hate "is a pitcher"

Mock drafts give you an idea of who the team is actually scouting - as the legitimate writers have enough access to know what teams have been seen at what players' games. Even in last year's "surprise" scenario we picked a player who literally got linked to us beforehand. In the case of the Pearson pick, it is extremely impressive to correctly "link" a player to a team that late in the first round. How often does a team actually pick a player that actually comes out of completely left field? Not often. The Cubs drafting that one random pitcher (Hayden Simpson?) is one example.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) I’m sorry you’re offended that I’m calling you out for taking the easiest stance on the draft possible What’s douchey is guys who have no clue about the draft being the ones who think they need to forewarn everybody that the mock drafts aren’t going to play out as the projections. Well no s***, thanks for the heads up MLB draft is so wild because of all the shenanigans that happen in the background. Signability issues, college committments, makeup issues, how much money they’re asking for, health, injury history, how comfortable teams are drafting prep, risk vs upside, etc. Making sense of all this is yeoman’s work. Radioscouts pod mentioned about how it would be more simple if its just ranking guys based on talent and taking the best guy available. It would be so much easier if that’s the case, like the NBA draft, where you know what position a guy is playing, what role they’ll fit on your team right away, and the slot money is also hard locked. In MLB we are projecting guys that won’t have any impact on the club until several years down the road, trying to find a good fit is pointless. Guys also have to remember, names listed on those mocks moving up and down have been scouted heavily for 3++ years now. Meaning teams have opinions formed on these kids and created big boards based on 40+ months of scouts and cross-checkers following these kids around. Teams definitely know more than fans do and all this mock stuff is just fun speculation and getting an idea who’s actually out there and what tools they have. Edited June 2, 2019 by BlueRocky

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Spencer Jones is probably the best athlete in the draft and most handsome. How can the Jays not draft this guy?

baubau Verified Member Posted June 3, 2019 Author Posted June 3, 2019 Some last minute MLB draft rumours https://www.mlb.com/news/latest-news-2019-mlb-draft?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) Some good notes from the MLB draft show before I hit the sack: - Carroll is being listed 5-11 170 which looks a bit better than 5-10 160. Drawing lots of Benintendi comps with less pop and maybe better glove, video footage shows he’s got some serious speed (like out-sprinting other guy by a mile) - Jim Callis really likes Brett Baty and says half the orgs took him off their draft boards just based on age, getting penalized way too much. He sees an elite bat. - Jackson Rutledge touches 99 and already a wipeout slider (ceiling 65 grade offering), potential 3 plus pitches but has command issues. - Keoni Cavaco has some serious helium, potential plus 3B or even a chance to stick at short, plus power. Scouts didn’t see too many games, but draft stock rocketed after workouts. - Brennan Malone has a very impressive delivery, velo, and mound presence. Might have second best stuff in prep class next to Espino - They really like Daniel Espino and thinks there’s ace potential, Harold Reynolds doesn’t buy the arm slot and long arm action issues and think his stuff is the best in the whole class. Triple-digit FB with two lights-out breaking pitches. Will thrive under the right system. - Shea Langeliers is being labelled the best defensive catcher prospect they’ve seen (@last decade) and they love his makeup and has hit well after injury. (Jays also drafted him before) - Kody Hoese has some serious bat speed, home run derby type of swing. - Jack Leiter basically not signing no matter what, loves his opportunity to go Vanderbilt - They’re very high on Hunter Bishop, and all his tools, thinks he is centerfielder, only question is swing & miss - Brooks Lee wants to goto college under his coach dad, would only sign for first round $ - Greg Jones can run, like.. very very fast. - Callis thinks Vaughn is the best hitter in the draft period. Doesn’t care he’s 1B. - They’re giving Bobby Witt jr as high as 60 grade tools across the board. Great bat and very athletic, no doubts about SS position. They compared his swing to Donaldson due to leg kick - CJ Abrams getting Dee Gordon + power comps, good chance to stick af short, CF as fallback. Terror on the basepaths. - Jonathan Mayo doesn’t think this draft is better than last year overall. But there’s some really good bats here. The top end talent position player talent is better. “Hitter’s draft” Edited June 3, 2019 by BlueRocky
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 If Jack Leiter is so dead set on Vanderbilt, why declare for the draft? I don't know why, but I find that so irritating.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 If Jack Leiter is so dead set on Vanderbilt, why declare for the draft? I don't know why, but I find that so irritating. Never close any doors...as remote as they may seem. I guess you never know if some team wants to blow their brains out and pay way over slot for him.

I don't see why a couple million would swing him away.

TheOutsider Verified Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Anyone got Keith Law's latest mock draft? I want to know who he likes (i.e. who the Jays should stay away from).
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 The last 3 mock drafts I've read from Fangraphs, Baseball America, MLB pipeline have us taking Alek Manoah but the consensus is just that we are looking at College arms.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 From Sportsnet draft primer- TOP CANADIAN DRAFT PROSPECTS Dasan Brown (Oakville, Ont) Some scouts have given Brown’s speed an 80 on the 20-80 scouting scale, so it’s possible he’ll go within the first two rounds. Brown now plays outfield for the Canadian Jr. National Team, but has committed to Texas A&M for college. Jake Sanford (Cole Harbour, N.S.) With a .398 average and .483 on-base percentage, Sanford has excelled at the plate for Western Kentucky University. The outfielder has 20 doubles and 22 home runs through 56 games, reinforcing his status as a bat to watch. Josh Burgmann (Nanaimo, B.C.) The right-hander has impressed in 79 innings at the University of Washington, posting a 3.99 ERA with 101 strikeouts compared to 22 walks. Edouard Julien (Québec, QC) Two years ago the Phillies took Julien in the 37th round. This time, he has a chance to go much higher. The infielder has a .371 on-base percentage and eight home runs at Auburn, where he’s a draft-eligible sophomore.
