Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 At least we know the feigned outrage of the social media world isn't confined to stupid SJW movements. In that way this is good news. I expect a green frog in Bill James' likeness to become a new meme soon. lol
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 He's right. Eliminate the best 1,000 current players from MLB orgs and the gameplay would be almost indistinguishable once they've been replaced by the next-best 1,000 players. Jabari Blash vs. AAA pitching would put up JD Martinez numbers, and not really look different doing it to the naked eye. Does Minute Maid or McCain make Jabari Blash?
CBlake Verified Member Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 Spend a week watching the low minor league's , say A ball or something and you would get an idea of the drop we would see. Pitching by far would see the biggest drop off by far. The argument that always leaves me shaking my head is when comparing players of different eras. How does anyone has any idea how Babe Ruth, Willie Mays , Reggie Jackson, etc, you can go on and on. I suspect comparing pitchers would be easier but who knows. I guess the real question are you dropping them in with their era in mind or in the context of today?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 Bill James is not wrong. To any casual observer, no difference. For decades some of the best players in the world were banned from playing MLB. Made no difference. And actually, if only US and Cdn born players were allowed to play MLB (sorry, Ang), attendance and ratings would be the same, or maybe higher taking into account certain mindsets. I think that's the point. He says the players are not the game. And he's right. The game wouldn't just fold up tent and disappear. There would be replacements. Would there be a difference in level of play? Probably. But I don't think as many would notice as you think.

Yep that's what I said
