Have they bought out Solarte yet? Other teams announced like 3-5 players all at once. We only announced Smoak that I am aware of. Are the Jays going for the drip drip method of news this off season.

Deadline is tomorrow at 5 PM... they could be actively shopping him with interest from other teams, they can pick up his option and trade him.

What do you guys think it would take to get Kiki Hernandez from the Dodgers to be our super utility dude?

Why... 2 yrs of control coming off a 3+ WAR season when we have a glutton of MIF and OF's, and we likely aren't contending? Everything points at pass!

I know the Dodgers would need a solid offer. From our point of view we have too many damn IF that are not "utility" guys. We need to cut the fat and move out a guy like Travis, plus 1 we have Drury, Tulo, Diaz, Gurielle, Urena, Vlad Jr soon, I am sure I am missing someone, the problem is, many of them can only play 1 position or 2 max. Kiki can play all three OF positions and has played every IF position but catcher I think. Plus, he can hit.. So, my thinking is go for quality vice quantity and with positional flexibility. Package the other guys to some other team and get pitching.

The Jays will have utility in spades:

Diaz can play SS and 3B

Gurriel can play SS and 2B

Drury can play 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, and RF

Biggio can presumably play 1B, 2B, 3B, and LF

What more do you need?

Lots of "Ifs and buts", there's no point, and it still clogs up our OF and MIF.

Right, there's no point? Hard Pass.

After 5 pm ET. Dont see any news on Solarte??

Jays have declined Solartes contract

ROSTER UPDATE:

We've exercised our 2019 club option on 1B Justin Smoak and declined our 2019 club option on INF Yangervis Solarte.

Solarte will remain on the 40-man roster and is eligible for arbitration.

Poor Solarte is going to have his option declined (already done) and be non tendered in a span of a month.

Why, poor Solarte, he'll get a job, no doubt. He's just redundant here?

Such a weird contract for an older player still in his arb years. I guess San Diego was banking on him being a 5 WAR super-utility superstar by age 30 and bank the profits on his club options.

Joc Pederson would be a better target imo.

In 2016, he was close to being a 4 WAR player. His platoon splits though are pretty drastic and he is a very streaky hitter. I like Joc Pederson and would welcome him in a Blue Jays uniform, though I don't think he would be worth the asking price in trade. Pretty much we already have a similar outfielder in Randal Grichuk offensively.

He really hasn't gotten much of a chance versus lefties since the Dodgers use platoons so much, so he might be able to improve that somewhat. He definitely is a bit streaky. When you look at the numbers though, you're talking about a guy who has put up 3.1 WAR, 3.6 WAR, 0.6 WAR, and 2.7 WAR in strong side platoon playing time. He's drastically cut down on the strikeouts (19.2% last year), has a great walk rate, power, and plays probably slightly above average defense if he's not in CF. With the Dodgers now having Kiki, I could see a Giles for Joc swap not being unreasonable. Trade Pillar, move Grichuk to CF, Joc to RF.

I'd give him more of a chance against LHP and I think playing half of his games at the RC, he could be a 30-HR threat. Plus, he could get on-base somewhat decently, better than Pillar and Grichuk. Pederson is also only 26 as well.

ROSTER UPDATE:

RHP Justin Shafer has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the @BuffaloBisons. He is off our 40-man roster.

RHPs Rhiner Cruz, Taylor Guerrieri and Jake Petricka have cleared waivers and will become free agents.

Tim Leiper also fired.

DeMarlo Hale and Luis Rivera have got to be worried, starting to look like a big revamp of the coaching staff.
