Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 Gurriel should be in the majors. He's a younger version (with a contract until 2024) of the utility role player spot that Urshela and Martin are currently occupying.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 Nice bounce back start for SRF He'll hopefully be in the rotation next year, it's looking very thin with Biagini's failure as a starter and Happ & Estrada's deals both expiring. We might be forced to pick up Garcia's $10m option just to try to fill out the rotation.

Do they not want to take his .165 ave out of the lineup? WTF.

There are cheaper ways to fill out a rotation than throwing 10M at a replacement level pitcher.

Atkins has been less than stellar with day to day roster management of the club even going back to last season. His performance justifies the call up even not taking into account the corpses they have been throwing out at SS lately. Even when he was on the Majors he did pretty well.

He's fine playing catcher 4-5 times a week, still the best option there. Maile is a decent backup but the bat is getting exposed. 40% strikeout rate the last month.

Honestly it looks like Danny Jansen is the best option back there, but I don't think they can justify taking Martin out and starting Maile and only playing Jansen a few days per week as a backup, nor could they really justify starting Jansen and using Martin as a backup. The roster is kinda train-wrecked right now with under-performing high-paid guys.

What is this guy going to be? He's going to have to show elite bat to ball skills if he's ever going to be a useful bat. It's looking like his brothers 2017 season might be the best we could expect? 118 wRC+, 4% BB, 11% K

Roster is a train-wreck for sure, but now that we pretty much know we are not going to compete this year, our catching situation is pretty clear. Jansen will get the call-up at some point either late this year or early next and can spell Martin a decent amount and learn from the master. There are worse things in the world than having a young catcher split time with a guy like Russ for a year +/-, and its totally justifiable so Russ shouldn't be upset by it. If it wasn't for the $20M factor, this would actually be a pretty ideal situation in terms of development. I do wonder if you ate a bunch of money if you could move Russ later next year. He's still valuable defensively and I think has been a bit unlucky this year with the stick.
