THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Looks like the "number" Atkins has given JD takes into considering logical decline and is, thus, lower than what JD expects. JD probably wants 8/240M or something like that. 30 AAV and tons of years. I'd do 6/160M or something and front load it, but the years JD likely wants would scare me away. steve buffery Verified account @Beezersun Josh Donaldson said he and his agent have talked to #BlueJays GM Ross Atkins about an extension but have essentially decided to suspend talks at this point and concentrate on the season. Said the Jays have expressed a sincere interest in signing him long term steve bufferyVerified account @Beezersun That being said, #Donaldson said he anticipates being a free agent when the 2018 season is over while adding that extension talks with the #BlueJays might heat up again during the season. He said they just don't see "eye to eye" at this point
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Sounds like JD thinks he can defy traditional aging curves. Where have we heard that before?
Shart Verified Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Those JD comments make me sad. He's gonners. Should we start a "Josh Donaldson Appreciation" thread now?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 An extra motivated Donaldson doesn't sound like a bad thing. I'm not convinced hes completely gone because I don't think he will go into free agency with much demand because of his age and the quality of the free agent market. I still believe we have as good of chance to resign him as ever. If we do suck this year he will be traded at the deadline though.

After the way this offseason has progressed leaguewide, I would have to say that these numbers are obsolete. No team is going to give JD 8 or even 6 years.
sdyment Verified Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Hey if that's how he wants to spend his retirement... Did he retire? I just thought he got distracted *LOOK, there’s something shiny!!* and forgot that he played baseball...

No team is going to give JD 8 or even 6 years. I dunno. This year's FA market is really bad, and there will still be more total spending than there was in last year's market, despite enhanced tax penalties causing a bunch of rich teams to try try to reset their luxury tax penalties for a 2019 splurge. I'm not really buying into a new, fiscally responsible free agency going forward.

Shart Verified Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Based on JD's language today, I'd say he's looking for 7-8 years and Jays are offering 4-5 years.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Those JD comments make me sad. He's gonners. Should we start a "Josh Donaldson Appreciation" thread now? I mean, I guess anything is possible but I never really expected JD to sign here long term. I just hope he has a killer year so they can peddle him at the dealine for some good assets. That said, they'll probably be hovering around .500 and will be afraid to pull the trigger on moving him as not to alienate the fairweather fans...and might lose him for a draft pick. That's what being a lifetime fan of Toronto sports has done to my confidence level.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 He’s right. Guys like Jose Bautista, who really take care of their bodies, can age like fine wine and remain elite into their late 30s. It’s the dumpy dudes with the Ortiz bods who will never make it to that age. Easy to project.

Maybe not the best example to use.

Exactly right (sarcasm duly noted) In terms of third basemen he's as likely to age like David Wright as he is to age like Adrian Beltre
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Sorry. Didn't catch the sarcasm, as I know that Bautista was actually pretty good until this past season. But I thought Jose was older than he was. My bad.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Recent elite sluggers who have remained elite into their late 30's and beyond: David Ortiz Adrian Beltre Recent elite sluggers who have fallen off a cliff in their late 30's: Too many to list here
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Exactly right (sarcasm duly noted) In terms of third basemen he's as likely to age like David Wright as he is to age like Adrian Beltre I’d still give him like 6/150, because I love him.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Same 4-5 years hell yes 6 Mmmmmm if you have to Any more and it's a hard no Yup, that's about where I am unless the AAV is much different than 25M a year.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Yup, that's about where I am unless the AAV is much different than 25M a year. Maybe 6/150 plus two team options that become player options if he finishes top 10 in MVP voting in either year 5 or 6 of the contract?

Fiddlehead Verified Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 It’s a difficult situation for the Jays to sign JD for more than 5 years, especially with VGJr in the hopper.
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Two official statements from Atkins ring through 1. Donaldson's agent know the number 2. Such a contract would ensure that Donaldson would remain a Blue Jay for the rest of his career Based on that I have to be believe a 5 year offer was made. If it wasn't I think the fan base should be extremely dissapointed. I don't care that they don't want to give Donaldson what is needed to extend him. I've bought in However has someone who has bought in to the Atkins plans I would be extremely angry if the above statements we're not true. Should it come out that Donaldson was only offered a 3-4 year deal then it would mean that the front office is not to be trusted. What I worry about is that through this process of not signing the stars, the attendance and tv numbers will be affected leading to a lower tv number down the road. That would worry me. If the revenues for the team contract payroll will follow. Again it is a lot of speculation, I've bought in to the regime. However I think if the front office is not going to resign the best player on the team the fans have a right to know where the two sides didn't match.

Danny Lozano, his agent, I’m sure would find out if I told you guys what that number was, but we do have that number — we have come up with a clear walk-away that we would be willing to commit to him for him to remain a Blue Jay probably for the rest of his career."
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 It’s a difficult situation for the Jays to sign JD for more than 5 years, especially with VGJr in the hopper. One has nothing to do with the other. Vladdy isn't going to stick at 3B.

Price over 30. Cabrerra getting 30 until he's 40. Jason Heyward is making 28 mil, Verlander 28 mil, Felix, Lester, Pujols in the 27 mil range. Donaldson has been top 4 in FWAR for 4 years in a row and would have been 5 in a row if he hadn't been injured last year. A 25 mil AAV isn't going to cut it despite his age. A rich team will just eat the bad years on his contract to get the 7 win player for the first 2 years.
