Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 The other scenario is Shatkins is looking for a way to offset a JD deal, that will placate the fanbase. Cargo obviously is not that. Signing Darvish and trading JD is though. I'd rather have Darvish and the prospects from a JD deal, than JD alone in an extension.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 They need to trade JD in the offseason, not before the trade deadline, where we'll get 50% of his value. I'd suggest getting rid of a lot of other veterans, but there aren't many with much value. Tulo and Martin are both liabilities. We could potentially resign Pillar at a reasonable rate. Happ and Estrada are just good enough to avoid us from being a laughing stock. And Sanchez, Stroman and Osuna still have control left. Ideally, we trade JD for a young starting pitcher who is MLB ready, and ship Estrada/Happ off once we have the reinforcements

Honestly if you do that it makes no sense. If your signing Darvish you are looking to compete. Then your trading away your top bat..... It makes no sense as an organization to do that.

My concern is that if we are asking too much they will just got a different avenue.

Darvish @ 7/200 + say Gyorko + Flaherty + Grichuk or Donaldson @ 7/200 What side you got?

Darvish is older than I thought..... thought he was still under 30 Anyway, the thought is the only way JD gets traded is if Shatkins has an offsetting move to placate the (casual) fanbase.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Why would Darvish get paid even close to what Donaldson gets? Looking at Price and Greinke’s extensions. I think he gets about $200M.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Looking at Price and Greinke’s extensions. I think he gets about $200M. Darvish has never had a year that was close to what Price and Greinke did in 2015. Not to mention he has elbow troubles and Price and Greinke are workhorse starters. Darvish has only had 1 season where he's crossed the 200 IP threshold. Look how the Price deal is working out for Boston. Don't think he gets close to $200M personally. He's gonna go in the $150M-$170M range
Ace Verified Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I wouldn't mind some dumpster diving 1-year fliers like this. Move Donaldson, Happ, etc. for prospect hauls and look for some luck/value in free agency to fill holes.

I love JD, but man, if we can get two controllable decent starters and an A- prospect, it sets us up right. I wonder if we could include Morales in the deal, and take on another not great contract for an OF or something.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 This is the first offseason in three years where the 'talk about winning, and field the best team you can while making no long-term commitments' strategy could actually hurt the future. It hasn't yet cost them anything to make a fake effort to compete while really looking at 2019 and beyond, but JD's looming free agency is a situation where the sooner decisive action is taken, the better things will look for the future. I don't really care whether it's a trade or extension, but his trade value is going to drop by a lot between now and July, and it would be a shame to waste an opportunity at a big haul because you're putting on a dog and pony show for the casual fans. You gotta consider the possibility that Rogers won't let them trade their most easily marketable star.

I don't know Rogers is pretty bold and constantly does s*** people don't want them to do. They will just expose us to even more Marcus Stroman to fill the Donaldson gap.

I would try to extend Happ honestly. I think he would be open to it. Morales I would almost just outright cut.
bzapple Verified Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I'd actually be okay with CarGo, at least much moreso than Bruce, since he's likely to take a one year bounceback deal as opposed to the 3-4 years that Bruce is likely asking. Obviously people go on and on about home/away splits but really most players hit much better in their home ballparks. Coors obviously inflates offensive stats but that's why we have park adjusted metrics like wRC+. Also, his defense his consistently ranked as middling, not terrible, by UZR and DRS. Bruce has been a clear negative on defense for the last several years.
bowld Verified Member Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Just read we are in on Carlos Gomez and Carlos Gonzalez...
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 At this point in his career, is CarGo a clear upgrade over near-min guys Alford or Hernandez? I pretty much consider all three of them pretty big question marks at this point...
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 I'm fine with CarGo if it's a reasonably short term deal and is a deal that can be moved at the deadline for prospects once the Jays are out of it. It's basically an easy way to add a prospect or two. Trading existing prospects to field a lineup shouldn't be an option at this point.
