glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Damn, I recall Davidi mentioning at the trade deadline that the Jays had conversations about Markakis. Now Trollosi says it. Davidi at the deadline mentioned Lowrie and Grichuk as well. I'd be ok with circling back on those two, but hard pass on Markakis.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Goins will be on the 25 man roster on opening day 2018, 2019, and 2020. I'm sure of that. He might even get extended beyond that. Two different regimes, including a sabermetric one, values him despite everything aside from two months in 2015 telling us that he is absolute s***. I don't understand it, but he'll be a Jay for life. We just have to come to grips with it. Gruber was right. Two front offices obviously know much more than all of you do. It's about time all of you saps let go of this four year long grudge against Gruber that you have been losing and make an apology/Gruber was right thread and line up one-by-one to kiss his ass. The day you do this is the day Ryan Goins gets released. Until then, enjoy! I like clutch players who consistently drive in RBI in late game situations so I have nothing against this. Rajai Davis and Goins need their own spot on the Wall of Excellence beside Joe Carter.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 FFS - I just ate guys. Seriously. He's a below average hitter, base runner and defender. He barely deserves to make a team - let alone be a starter. The only way this makes sense is if a prospect is packaged with him for salary relief.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I get this idea. Prospect mining as some people already suggested. He'd be an improvement over what Bautista provided last year. And he has a recognized name in the AL East that the front office could window dress as trying to contend to casuals.

Does anyone believe this actually happens? Do we have any reason to believe a FO makes a conscious decision to trade or sign a guy simply to appease the casual fan?

The Jays did see a spike in ticket sales after the 2012 off season due to all the big expensive names. Hype sells in Toronto, but only to a certain point. Regardless, I don't even think Nick Markakis' mother would buy a ticket to see her son play in Toronto, much less casual Jays fans. This isn't 2008.

Seems like a weird time to be talking to a team about taking on a player's salary when there's been hardly any player movement. Doesn't really make sense.

Can't you take my brainstorming nonsense of thinking up of reasons to trade for Nick Markakis in stride?

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 There is not a single casual who knows who Nick Markakis is. But they sure love Ryan Goins...... Maybe we should worry less about the casuals. If we are winning they will show.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 What would it take to get Andrew McCutchen? Last year on his contract and could plug him in right. Doubt the asking price is that crazy.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I was just listening to BNS' and Zwelling's podcast from last Thursday(American Thanksgiving), Ross Atkins was on and there's some decent content, not sure if it was posted, I can't recall, anyhow give it a listen if you hadn't heard it and are starving for some BJ news... http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/letters-ross-atkins-blue-jays-mlb-beginnings-development/

I still think Zobrist would be a nice fit. The Cubs really don't need him now, and have a bit of a log jam at both 2nd and the outfield - the two areas we have a need at. Hell, he'd make a pretty good leadoff hitter too.

Sure would, they still need another SP and Of'er on top of that. Unless they want to roll with Hernandez, which I have know issue with.

He's also going to have very little trade cost and only a 1 year $10.5M contract. Who has no real injury history and bats left handed. Last year he went sub 100 wRC+ for the first time vs. RHP. It wouldn't take much improvement for him to break even for a 1 year salary and if the team is struggling or finds a better option in RF, he is a the kind of guy that is easy to move at the deadline. He certainly wouldn't be the first RF I look at but he's a low cost acquisition and might benefit from a move from Atlanta (he was terrible at home all three years in Atlanta and even had a 117 wRC+ on the road last year).

Lefty bat, cheap, would form a nice platoon with Pearce.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 They're apparently projecting 3/42 for Cozart. I wouldn't mind picking him up for that. He probably won't repeat what he did last year, but his walk rate has been increasing steadily and he plays great D. Let him play 2nd, and fill in for Tulo at SS when he makes his yearly DL appearances. Move Travis to the outfield, and see if that will keep him healthier.

I'd pay him more than that if he were willing to take on a role that let the team move him between SS/2B/3B as needed. Would still get his 600 PA, but would provide insurance for Tulo/Travis/JD.

Is 3/54 even too much for a guy that projects at around 3 wins this year? Biggest red flag would be if he needs a 4th year IMO.
