glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Otani will be posted. I know it’s a huge long shot, but dammit Shatkins find a way to make it happen. Promise him whatever the hell he wants.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Have you learned nothing from the Braves punishment. You can't give him whatever he wants. Well clearly whatever he wants that's legally allowed. I'm not expecting Shatkins to promise him a deed to a house or something. Ex. Tell him he's a full time DH, tell Kendrys to f*** off, and use an extra starter so that Ohtani can get additional rest during the season. Things like that. I'm sure every team will offer him that, but maybe those big words that Shatkins uses to illustrate a point can convince him.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Have you learned nothing from the Braves punishment. You can't give him whatever he wants. Yes you can? The ability to pitch and hit, an entire Country of support, high performance team, can live at the ballpark, new facilities in Dunedin, etc... Easy Peasy. Not to mention trades for Intl pool money.

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 So Otani's fair game... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/mlb-mlbpa-npb-reach-tentative-agreement-on-new-posting-system.html Dec 22nd will be due day. The next 31 days will be exciting and full of speculation and rumours. My poor heart.

Yeah, the Jays have openings in LF and RF, plus can tell Morales to f*** off and eat up the rest of the contract if they had to in order to free up the DH spot (the excess value from Ohtani would easily make up for $23m in sunk cost by dumping Kendrys). Tell him he can play some outfield, some DH, and have a rotation spot. Have Koehler or whoever the sixth starter is get some starts here and there to give Ohtani more rest during the season. Then you can sell the high performance dept, the country, etc. If Ohtani is a liberal, then use that trump card (pun intended). Just do whatever the hell it takes as long as it doesn't break any rules. Atkins seems confident that they can at least make a strong case, so who knows. Maybe just wishful thinking in the end, but if Ohtani's personality is as unique as they say it is, then every team probably has a shot. If he decides not to play for the Jays, then as long as he's not in the AL East, I'll be fine with it.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 And live in safer canada... should be an advantage to a japanese I don't really get this. Its not like players live in the slums or dangerous areas of the city they play for. When they go out they're probably taking a cab anyway.
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 care to explain how is that racist?

Key22 Verified Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Former Yankee - Godzilla said he will try his best to persuade him to go to New York. New York has more money than the Jays. New York has a FAR bigger financial gain for any star player to make kabillions on the side - hence Jeter buying a baseball team! The Yankees also want him. So 80% chance he signs in New York - 19.8% chance for all the other teams and 0.2% chance for the Jays. Yes come to Toronto where it's -20c for a bunch of months or 40c with sweltering humidity for another bunch of months. And come play in our crappy field turf ruin your legs old obsolete park. Woohoo - sign him up for that! If Shapiro and Atkins can convince this kid to play in Toronto I would be utterly amazed. Let me think - which utterly front line free agent has Toronto attracted in the last 10 years that we didn't have to overpay in either years or money or both? Plus we were lousy last year - worst offense in the league and what? We will let JD play out his contract get absolutely nothing for him as he leaves to the inevitable 5/$150 million (low end of what he will get) contract. Now if the Jays signed him - that might make other free agents (including Otani) look a little closer. Trade for Stanton, sign Cain, Sign JD, trade for Dee Gordon, sign Otani. Man it's simple like video game! Don't know why Rogers just doesn't spend $250million - who cares about luxury tax - this is Canada - tax tax tax is in our blood.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Ohtani making practically nothing and playing on a Yankees team that is already young and loaded, with enough money next year to hit the free agent jackpot, is a scary thought. That's my one fear with him. If he doesn't sign with the Jays, go anywhere except New York or Boston. Don't care where.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 this is Canada - tax tax tax is in our blood. Completely off topic, but this isn't really nearly as cut and dried as you might think, particularly when you factor in the health-care factors. It's really not an apples to apples comparison, but generally, the top 1% does better in the US, but middle and lower classes pay a lower tax rate in Canada (and that will be even more true if the current Republican tax plan passes...) https://www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/0411/do-canadians-really-pay-more-taxes-than-americans.aspx

You could've swapped New York with Toronto here and there would've been no difference. You're posts are still long as f*** without any actual substance.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 I had a freaking dream of our pitch to him last night lol. You know I'm getting invested in a potential signing when it's hitting dreamland. The dream pitch went well though, and he seemed to like the Trump burial inside of it, so I feel good about our chances 😁.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 Is it confirmed how much the Jays have to spend? I've read 50k and over $1m (after the Lane Thomas trade). That's a pretty substantial difference. I'm sure if Ohtani expressed interest in signing with the Jays, Shatkins would start trading for cap money so fast our heads would spin, but still having at least over a mil to start with is better than 50k.
