I'm not a fan of full rebuilds in baseball, in most cases it rarely makes sense. I mean rolling the dice on prospects that are 3-4+ years out comes with big risks, especially for a team that has rebuilt it's fanbase. That said, they might be able to piggy off the Leafs success to sell it to fans right now. I like the suggestion of listening to Stroman and Sanchez.

Thing is, the Jays aren't really in the position that they'll be counting on this years draft to start the rebuild. Selling many of the veteran assets they have right now will net prospects and or roster players already further along in development, not to mention the current farm assets that might be ready by 2019.

The additional draft picks from finishing near last this year and probably next will just add to that pipeline and be a bonus 3-4 years from now.

Got to test the waters of a Stro or Sanchez extension. If those guys are reluctant and hate the idea of going thru a 4-5 yr rebuild, should be moved. Either of them returns more than JD, IMO

Well we can rule out a Sanchez extension. Would be nice to get something done with Stroman asap.

At least our front office didn't blow top prospects for Adam Eaton(who just tore his ACL) or have players with $40M/year guaranteed due to backloading.. like Washington, which is going to be headed for a huge fall after 2018 when Harper bolts for the Yankees, Dodgers or somewhere else... and can't resign him because they gave Strasburg, Scherzer and Zimmerman huge backloaded deals.

Look, there are worse front offices than Toronto.

Why would they?

Not sure what you are asking. Young players sign long contracts for financial security in the event injuries derail their career.

If you are saying why would they sign knowing the Jays are not going to be very good through the prime of their careers, i agree with that. If I was in their shoes, I would hope to be moved to a team like Pitt.

And Pitt could use a rotation upgrade, and they have a loaded farm.

For pitchers especially, who have much higher risk of career de-railing injuries, there quite a few reasons why long term extensions could be signed from the pitchers POV

But that's also generally why you don't see teams offering long extensions to pitchers who still have years of control left. There's not a ton of upside for FOs to do so with that risk of injury plus the inherent volatility of pitchers in general

No kidding, especially for a franchise that is very deep in debt and can't actually afford these contracts. Wait until after 2018, when Murphy, Harper and others leave via free agency.. and Scherzer/Strasburg's backloaded deals destroy the team.

Nats don't exactly have deep pockets.. hence why so much backloading. No way the Nats can even think about affording Harper, as they won't be able to build around him..
