Nafro Verified Member Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 Prior to the next CBA lets get more education academies into the DR. Not saying education would stop people from doing stupid things (like driving fast on roads that aren't set out for those speeds, cause a lot of educated people do that too). But this is a perfect excuse to change a very flawed system that has kids being pulled from school at a very young age. This doesn't need to be about the most profit now, it's about bettering a country that has given a lot for Major League Baseball. This certainly is the best possible thing that could come from a tragedy like this. Unfortunately the more educated a population is, the more difficult it is to take advantage of and control. I think it will take people like Jose Bautista and other successful/educated latinos to help make those changes.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 Dinger, you'll appreciate the honesty of this title: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/yordano-ventura-and-andy-marte-have-died/
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 They destroyed baseball in the last country that they tried to help. This is a very unfortunate incident, but hopefully it isn't used as an excuse to meddle in the affairs of Dominican people and make things even worse. I don't even know what country you are referring to. I think the fact that they are taking kids out of school at 9 years old with the dream of playing baseball is the worst thing they can do. Education systems through sport have worked in soccer, basketball and boxing, mostly in South America and Africa. It ends up increasing the participation levels and encourages education.

Puerto Rico (I know it's not a country), but we've discussed how MLB 'programs' killed baseball there in another thread. This isn't the appropriate thread for it hough.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 I'll miss seeing Yordano pitch. His small stature and electric fastball was fun to watch. Wish I could have seen him live when I was in KC in 2015 but he wasn't scheduled to pitch in that series. RIP

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 Do they have some clauses in players contracts that if something happens to them their families get some payoff?

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 So can we talk about how gross it is that DR police tweeted a picture of his crumpled body pinned under his Jeep?
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 I defs didn't click any links to those shots. Its not even that I'm grossed out by death, it just seems invasive. Totally inappropriate.

Yikes - I didn't see that in the photo the first time I glanced at it. Thanks for making me go back and look. At least it's not gory. I thought he'd be skinnier than that TBH.

Well maybe people just aren't as squeamish about that kind of stuff over there as North Americans tend to be? I mean I don't know much of anything about Dominican news culture but I think it's a least plausible that the standards are different.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 So can we talk about how gross it is that DR police tweeted a picture of his crumpled body pinned under his Jeep? It was better than when Carlos Martinez tweeted out a picture of Oscar Taveras dead body including his face after his accident.

Probably not...but I didn't really react much either way. Maybe I just have no soul.

Maybe I just have no soul. Yeah that's fine. My only point is that "what's in good taste" could be a sliding scale. I mean it's surely not tasteful but it's also probably not as big a deal over there as it would be here. The anecdote that was shared about Taveras definitely suggests a different standard.

Maybe I just have no soul. Maybe you were just desensitized to death when you were young. I think I was 12 or so when I was morbidly curious and looked up the Daniel Pearl beheading. Ever since then, not a lot can phase me :S I should have been a paramedic...

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to how people view these photos. The Taveras picture never bothered me (not that I was seeking it out) but I refused to see a family member of mine who had been killed in a car accident afterwards. I guess for me, unless I have an emotional attachment, it doesn't bother me. It does seem that the Dominican culture sure is different from what we're used to in North America.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Yeah, unconfirmed, but that's messed up if true. Side note: People are acknowledging the severity of the accusations and there's Matt Harvey: Hi Pedro. lulz
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Sorry to derail a serious thread but Nightcrawler is a pretty interesting movie that somewhat relates to what is being discussed. I really liked Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal is great in it. The end was also not what I was expecting at all.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I'm sure he had life insurance too. Looks like roughly $1.5million is a standard payout for MLB players, subject to the same potential invalidation that normal life insurance has (i.e. whether the incontestability clause has come into effect on the policy)
