AA promotes Perry Minasian to Asst. GM and steals Tinnish from the Jays. Dana Brown should follow next and the four (headless) horsemen will ride again.

Was it you who said Tinnish isn't cool with Alex?

The Dodgers have signed a minor league deal with Pat Venditte (the switch pitcher). Hope he gets another chance, it was fascinating to watch him pitch.

It was fascinating the *think* about his career.

It is BORING to watch him pitch. He's just a soft-tossing fringe arm, from both sides.

Wasn't boring for the fans of the team he was facing.

Yes please.

Though he’s coming off a huge season split between the Tigers and Cubs, catcher Alex Avila said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM today that he’s open to a backup role on a contending team (Twitter link). Avila explains that his “number one” priority is signing with a team that has an opportunity to reach the postseason, rather than guaranteeing himself a starting job on a team that is less of a clear-cut contender. Set to turn 31 in January, Avila batted .264/.387/.447 with 14 homers in 376 plate appearances this past season. He also ranked second in the Majors in hard-contact rate (min. 300 PAs) and tied for 18th in average exit velocity (min. 100 batted balls). The Nationals, D-backs and Rockies are among the expected contenders that could add a new starting catcher, while several playoff clubs could look to augment their backup catching option.

I don't think FAs really see the Blue Jays as much of a world series contender for this season. Washington would be a better fit for him I'd think. Get more playing time plus they have that division basically on lock.

The Braves announced today that they’ve traded right-hander Jim Johnson to the Angels in exchange for minor league lefty Justin Kelly. The Angels also pick up a yet-undetermined amount of international bonus money in the deal, per each club’s announcement.

I raise an eyebrow at every team who aquires IFA pool money right now

Do the Angels have any shot at Ohtani?

Edit: Angels only had a measly 150k before this so meh

So basically Atlanta gives LA some bonus pool money in exchange for taking on Johnson's $4.5M.

WTF, the Braves sent LA their remaining $1.21M in pool space in the trade. That seems like way too much to give up just to get a team to take on Johnson and his $4.5M. You'd think a team in on Ohtani would have given up something of actual value for that space.

Jesus - I wish the Jays got that deal.

Apparently the Angels are using it for a run at Ohtani. But even if they miss out, there are interesting things to do with it (like a flier on Maitan). I definitely would have taken Johnson on for that pool space.

Johnson's 1 year removed from a 1.4 WAR season. Everything looked the same last year except some bad HR/FB luck and some lost control. You might also get a quality reliever for $4.5M

Boxberger suxxxx

Wow - I actually thought he was a stud when healthy. The lie detector (Fangraphs) confirmed that was a lie.

Can someone briefly explain how in 2014, Box posted a 2.84 FIP and a 1.95 xFIP over 64 2/3 innings, but only registered a 0.9 WAR, but in 2015, Osuna posted a 3.20 FIP and 3.60 xFIP over 74 innings, but posted a 1.8 WAR?

Cause relievers are hard to equate... :P It's best to check variance through other metrics like SIERA/WPA and RE24. Not sure if that helps.

1. It's 1.3 for Osuna in 2015

2. xFIP is not used in calculating fWAR. It's just FIP, and the difference would that you are looking at different years...which means different replacement levels. Plus 5 extra IP's

Different home parks too. RC is a launching pad.

and the Trop is a Maxi Pad

I honestly thought most of the park factor was caught in FIP though?

It is sort of... https://www.fangraphs.com/library/war/calculating-war-pitchers/

Park Adjustment

Now that we have FIPR9, we need to adjust it for the pitcher’s home park. On our park factors page, you will see a park factor labeled “FIP,” which is the park factored designed specifically based on the FIP components. To park adjust, simply divided FIPR9 by the FIP park factor over 100.

pFIPR9 = FIPR9 / (PF/100)

pFIPR9 is the number we’re going to use as our measure of pitcher value. It’s FIP with infield flies adjusted for park and scaled to RA9.
