Perhaps a separate agreement can be made with Japan to exclude their players from the normal international rules?

 

If Otani comes close to repeating this season's stats then he would eclipse the hype of the Dice-K signing.

At the end of the 2017 season is when the backloaded part of Mike Trout's contract kicks in ($33m per year). If the Angels miss the playoffs again in 2017, I could see a scenario where they trade Trout for a king's ransom, and then try to sign Otani to offset a backlash from the fans.
