King Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Author Posted November 12, 2016 Lets have some fun. I bet that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. makes it to the blue jays way before Anthony Alford ever does if at all. And for the record just because he does well in the fall /winter leagues does not mean he should be the blue jays 2 top prospect. Pitching in that league is not very good. Just ask the blue jays catcher from a couple of years ago. Here's the thing Todd. I'm going to explain this so you listen closely. You keep saying Alford isn't a top prospect but you have never actually explained why. I'll explain why people like Alford. - Alford was a highly touted baseball and football prospect out of high school. - Alford signed with the Jays for 750k, to play both football and baseball. - Alford agreed to play with the Jays full time at the end of 2014. - In Alfords first full season as a baseball player, he hit .293/.418/.394 in Low A and .302/.380/.444 in High A. As a 20 year old with very little baseball reps! - In Alfords 2nd season, he struggled in the first half of the season with injuries. He played through a knee injury (http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-top-prospect-alford-trying-rehabilitate-knee/) that he opted not to have surgery on. BOSTON – The Toronto Blue Jays won’t specify exactly what type of injury top prospect Anthony Alford suffered, but the centre-fielder is trying to rehabilitate his right knee in an effort to return to the field without surgery. - In June of his 2nd full season, he had a collision with Richard Urena chasing down a flyball squibber. He had to be taken off the field on a stretcher, and was diagnosed with a concussion. - He returned on June 22nd and hit .200/412/440 for the rest of the month. In July he hit 255/366/457 and in August he hit 280/382/452. The improvement from when he returned from his injuries, is obvious to anyone who is paying attention. - On top of what looks like a 60-70 hit tool, impressive plate discipline and OBP rates, and 50-55 power, he is said to have plus speed, baserunning, and defense. That's an allstar calibre player in CF if he puts it all together, and maybe better.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 I'll throw a list together, probably tomorrow. Nice to have some talent to be excited about in the minors again. *edit* 15 is so much easier to tackle then the longer lists we have done. I like it.

The thing is, even if Alford never does make it, your ranking was still ridiculously incorrect based on his chances and tools compared to our other prospects. I seriously think you just forgot him on your first list and should have just owned up to it.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Ignore the lists from 2, 8, and 11 please. Nah, none of us would put a guy with repertoires like theirs in the pen. Sanchez is a 1.5 pitch pitcher. Double plus fastball and a show-me breaking ball that can't miss bats. No bueno in the rotation; hard to see it ever being bueno. I think the "a bird in hand is worth two in the bush" line applies. Just shove him in the pen and enjoy the hand bird. Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole is usually a bad idea. 2nd quote is from March 2016. Dumbass.

I never said it would give a better result. But it is a board ranking, and these are the people of the BJMB. After this list is completed, if you want to go and cherry pick each posters list and make a ranking with all the lists of posters you like, then go ahead. But that is not what I am about, so that's not the way this is going to be.

It was about accuracy, not picking who was the most liked. There's a place for fun activities like this and serious lists as well, so I have no issue with what you're doing. Don't make it a pissing match with passive aggressive comments.

King Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 WE have alot better prospects then Alford. So Alford is 22. And the Cuban is 23 And king is that not what they said about Pompey. Has he stayed in the big show. NO BUT BACK TO MY POINT FROM THE START Alford would be alot better if the jays had more farm teams and less players on a team. Having between 30 to 40 players on a team is not helping them development. And from what I heard the new management is not high on him. Everybody has a opinion on this guy and sometime in the future we will be saying you were right about is guy or I'll be saying I was wrong. You're right Pompey was similarly touted. He was in the 30-50 range of all MLB prospects back in the 2014 offseason if I recall. Despite the disappointing 2016 season, Pompey projects for 1.2 fWAR in 113 games, so I don't think the book is completely closed on him yet. I don't see how having more farm teams would help Alford. He's already playing everyday.
JG34 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Well done, King, on opening it up to everyone. It will be obvious if a list is a troll job or not. Everybody values certain prospects differently, more people submitting lists creates more discussion and makes the ranking that much more reputable. Look how different FG, MLB, BA, BP, ESPN, etc top prospect lists are, but you get a better understanding of which prospects to watch for (Besides the well known top tier).

King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 First of all I'm not just talking about Anthony Alford. Second you and most people on here are not seeing the big picture. DEVELOPING more top end prospects is more important then fighting over one guy who may or may not make it to the show. Having players or pitchers having more at bats or more inns pitched is more important. To become the players the team drafted or signed is. By having more minor league teams is. And slowing down rushing them though the minor leagues. And real prospects are actually between the ages of 17 to 23. 24 and 25 year olds aren't really prospects anymore they are in between players. Players you can not call prospects but are still really good players. None of this is relevant to Anthony Alford which is what we were discussing. He already plays everyday and at an appropriate level. Now answer this question, 1) Why do you think Anthony Alford will never reach the MLB? Is there something about his profile as a baseball player that you don't like?
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2016 Author Posted November 14, 2016 He is over rated. Just because he played football and now has been in the system for four years and has not really proved he should be this teams 1st or 2nd prospect on the jays. Going into year 5 he should be higher then what he is. He should have been in new hampshire to start and ending in buffalo. Or in his second year in buffalo. And he strikes out way to much for a contact hitter. You can not see his speed if he is always striking out. He's had some of the blue jays best outfielders try to teach him but it's not sinking in. And yes he is a little hot headed. You shouldn't look at it like that though. He lost 3 years of baseball development due to football (2012, 2013 and 2014). What he has done in 2015 and 2016 has been really impressive considering the lost development years he had as well as the injuries he suffered in the first half of 2015.
