metafour Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 You guys are crazy. Thew Bautista/Texas thing would blow over in a minute if he signed there. Its all a bunch of guys with huge ego's: guess what, you 'hate' each other when you are on different teams, but the feeling flips when you're playing on the same team. Its sports.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Johnny Damon and Jacoby Ellsbury went to New York. This rivalry stuff is for the fans. If Texas is the high bidder, he'll happily go and be welcomed with open arms by their fans and players. I must have missed Teixiera clocking Ellsbury a few months before he signed with the Yankees?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2016 Author Posted November 8, 2016 I must have missed Teixiera clocking Ellsbury a few months before he signed with the Yankees? You really think Bautista would leave millions on the table because he got into an altercation with one of their players one time? It must be really hard for NHL players to pick a destination in free agency. Can't go to a team if they employ players fought/hit you before.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 C'mon folks.. new team, new season, new slate... none of that s*** matters.

I'd say if Bautista was chasing a $200MM deal none of this would matter but he'll likely see offers in the $40-$50MM range and if the Rangers outbid everyone, option 2 is probably going to look just as nice.

If that's over 3 years he'll be taking the QO.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2016 Author Posted November 8, 2016 I wonder what the team would have been willing to give Bautista before the season when he allegedly demanded 6/180 and then cried to the media that he was being treated unfairly. Probably more than the 3/50 he's going to get.

Probably more than the 3/50 he's going to get. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get closer to 4/80, although I could see it being from a team that moves him to 1B.

I don't think anyone wants to pay $20MM for a 40yr old Bautista when 3/60 would more than likely get the job done.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 If that's over 3 years he'll be taking the QO. Why? Taking 3 years for $50MM ($16.6 AAV) likely covers him to the end of his career (throw in an option year) vs 1 guaranteed year at 17.2 where he could risk further injury, further decline and a lot less future money. Even though he's had an off year it's probably his best chance to cash in. It's a super risky move to try and rebuild value when the age clock is against you.

Dude, 9 months ago he wanted 30 per... if he thinks he can rebuild value this year, he just might. Just throwing it out there, we'll see by next Monday, anyhow.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Too bad that's not how the QO works... Huh?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Huh? You can't just go out into free agency and then find out the contract you wanted isn't there, and then go back and accept the QO.

He's a free agent right now, you don't think his agent is working the phone with every single team right now, he has a week to accept or deny the QO, I don't think you know how it works, mate?

To be honest I kind of feel sorry for him, we squeezed every last drop of elite value out of him, that contract couldn't have gone better from the Jays perspective.

metafour Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 if he thinks he can rebuild value this year, he just might Rebuild value? He is 37 years old next year. 37. Thirty Seven. What do you even think is going to happen even if he has a better year? Some team signs him for $100+ million? No chance, period.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 I don't look at it like this at all - nor should you. I simply want the be value for the money. Disagree, we should be signing both a 1B/DH and an OF and need to fit that within the budget. For example if signing Cepedes meant we'd have Smoak and whoever we can get on waivers (or other cheap option) for 1B, that's worse IMO then signing EE and having an outfield of Carrera, Pompey, Pillar, Upton and a dirt cheap signing.

Absolutely, now hopefully we have seen the last of him.

That was more due to injuries, that were pretty unlucky, I believe he still has a 130 or better wRC+ bat in him. I'm sure he believes he's still elite, that's why I suggested it wouldn't surprise me if he thinks he's getting low-balled on the market, he'd be back. And yes those contracts from both him and EE were ridiculously good in value.
