So you want to get rid of guys like Tulo and Martin but also want to trade for Votto? What is your logic there? At least if Tulo and Martin stop hitting, they still play premium defensive positions. If Votto stops hitting... He's useless

I think the only thing I've said was that Votto for Sanchez starts to look interesting if the Reds eat like $40M. That effectively takes him to the same salary range as the other two, and he's a far better player.

I also have a serious man crush on Joey Votto.

When a guy can put up an OBP of .500 for weeks and weeks, it's hard not to achieve a major stiffy (no homo).

Players can drop off the face of the earth. Votto is a huge risk especially at his age.

Go look at McCutchen

I would actually love to acquire McCutchen right now. Taking a look under his hood, his depressed numbers are mostly just a byproduct of being too aggressive this year, his selectivity has gone down. He's bounced back lately, and IMO, he's just way too young and too good to be a steep decline candidate at this point in time. He'd be a perfect acquisition target for the Jays in the offseason.

What do you think the cost would be on the Jays end?

I'm pretty sure he is still going to command a premium. He could easily bounce back, or he could turn into Carlos Gomez.

Unfortunately just one of 25K today. I'll be back active on the forum and will post this site every time someone on this board becomes one of these stats. We are not going to be one of the traditional sport sites with this stuff.

Yaay. Glad we're not gonna be one of those homophobic sites.

Keep the similes between bad trades and getting raped coming though. Perfectly OK.

Actually those are metaphors, not similies.

I've seen people say "Greenwood got raped on that deal," or "that's straight-up rape," but never "that trade is so lopsided it's like a raping."

If you find a post where I made a rape commentary I apologize. I'm trying to hard to change my language. I stole this off of a Reddit site for better terms for the bad trades. I've been doing my best to change my language.

Ah, yes. The ol' slanty swap. The biased barter. The partisan peddle. The cheeky commerce. The short-sighted switch. The cockamamie contract. The effluvient exchange. The hokum hoodwinks. The hornswoggling hullabaloo. The miscreant merchantry. The degenerate deal. The simpleton swindle. The rambunctious ruse. The straightforward subterfuge. And my favorite: The flagitious finagle.

Joey Votto said earlier this year if he doesn't perform to his standards he would consider retiring regardless of what his contract says. I doubt he will play all the remaining years of his career unless he remains outstanding.

Of course anyone would say that to command a higher contract.

Votto has the 15th highest career wRC+ of all-time. He's at another level offensively than Martin/Tulo. You point stands - but the chances that Votto falls off a cliff offensively is significantly lower than it is for Tulo/Martin.

He also fits the profile of a guy at increased risk of spending half of his remaining team control working back from surgery (huge velocity, worrisome mechanics according to people who know things about mechanics). He's really good, but he's a volatile asset.

^This. I think this fact gets ignored a lot...but it's extremely true.

Fun fact: Joey has a higher career wRC+ than Miguel Cabrera.

It's higher than Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron, Manny, DiMaggio & Pujols too. 15th all time.

It's sad, because a lot of Reds fans and media are too concerned about his RBI totals to fully appreciate watching one of the best hitters to ever play.

Tragically I still don't know if he gets into the HoF. Dude has always been criminally underrated.

I remember a discussion a few years ago. Probably MLB Network. They were discussing if Votto should be more free swinging so he could drive in more runs instead of walking and leaving it on the shoulders of someone else. Hes paid to drive in runs!

I think if he continues to play at a high level for the next 5 years, he'll get in.
