Buffalo lost to the Gwinnett Braves 6-4 on Thursday from Coolray Field, falling for the seventh time against the G-Braves in 2016. The Herd have not just struggled against Gwinnett, having dropped 23 of its last 27 ballgames, and losing five straight games during the second-to-last road trip of the season. The Braves' Rio Ruiz was responsible for five of the club's six runs, ending the night with both a two-run home run and a three-run double. With the score tied at one, a two-out, two-run home run by Ruiz gave the G-Braves a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the third. Ruiz added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, clearing the bases with a three-run double against Bisons' starter Scott Copeland. Ruiz, batting cleanup as the designated hitter, also walked twice in the contest. The Herd attempted a rally in the ninth, cutting Gwinnett's lead from 6-2 to 6-4. Darrell Ceciliani doubled in Andy Burns against Kanekoa Texeira, and Matt Dominguez grounded out with runners on second and third, driving in a second run. Jesus Montero walked, bringing Chris Colabello up with runners on the corners and two outs. Representing the go-ahead run, Colabello struck out looking on a called strike three to end the ballgame. Copeland was knocked around for his roughest outing of the year, allowing a season-high six earned runs and nine hits, along with three walks over 5.0 innings of work. He falls to 3-2 in 2016, losing his first road game of the year. The Bisons worked some two-out magic at the plate in the top of the second, as a pair of singles and a walk brought up Dalton Pompey. The Buffalo centerfielder worked a bases loaded free pass against Braves' starter Jed Bradley, forcing in the game's first run. Gwinnett loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, tying the game on a sac-fly by shortstop Daniel Castro. Castro was one of just three hitters to end the night hitless for the Braves. Jed Bradley allowed five hits and four walks, but kept the Bisons to just one run. He picked up one of his six strikeouts in the top of the seventh, fanning Darrell Ceciliani with runners on the corners. Chris Withrow relieved Bradley for the top of the eighth, pitching in a major league rehab assignment. He was quickly greeted by leadoff batter Matt Dominguez, who promptly deposited his team-leading 18th home run of the year. The Braves mustered just one walk and no hits against Bisons' reliever Bo Schultz in the sixth and seventh innings. Lefty reliever Matt Dermody kept the score 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth, preventing Reid Brignac from capitalizing on a two-runners on opportunity, by striking the veteran out. The Bisons now return home for the final fridaynightbash! of the season with Scott Diamond taking the mound in a matchup against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. First pitch is set for 7:05p.m. from Coca-Cola Field. David Buchanan is scheduled to take the bump for the 'Pigs, in what will be the first of seven-straight home games for Buffalo, and the last homestand of the season. BISONS NOTES: Ryan Goins was optioned to Buffalo on Thursday, as the Blue Jays activated Jose Bautista from the 15-day disabled list… Jesus Montero's 15-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in IL, ended when he went 0-4 with a walk… A.J. Jimenez caught Emilio Bonifacio stealing in the bottom of the first, the 25th caught steal for Jimenez this season… Matt Dominguez' 18 home runs are the most by a Bison since Dan Johnson also hit 18 in 2014. http://i.imgur.com/w6kTM98.png http://i.imgur.com/WHpLfNT.png http://i.imgur.com/zvIApAI.png http://i.imgur.com/vpVjwzI.png Reading, PA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (62-69) could not hold an early 1-0 lead in a 6-1 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils (83-47) on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. RHP John Stilson's fastball was clocked at 98-100 mph on the ballpark radar gun in his two innings of relief. New Hampshire was held to five singles, including a pair in the third inning that led to a sacrifice fly from Richard Urena to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead. Reading would score six unanswered runs from there, highlighted by a single, double and homer from Roman Quinn. Reading starter John Richy (W, 4-3) allowed four hits in eight dominant innings, and retired 16 batters in a row from the third to the eighth. Wilmer Font (L, 3-1) threw 99 pitches through five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out four batters against no walks. Chris Smith struck out the side in a hitless inning of relief in the bottom of the eighth. John Straka (1-1, 12.91) will start for New Hampshire against Tom Eshelman (4-4, 5.54 ERA) in Friday night's matchup, which is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. The Fisher Cats final homestand of the season opens on Monday, August 29 against Trenton at 6:35 p.m. with Firefighter Appreciation Night. Four of the six Dunedin runs went unearned, including the first two in the top of the second inning. Two 3B Kevin Cornelius errors led to a 2-0 Jays lead. Tampa cut the lead in half in the fourth with a 1B Connor Spencer bases loaded walk, but Harris stranded the bases loaded. After Thon and Pentecost belted their doubles in the fifth, Cortes struck out the next two batters to bring his five inning total to ten and ending his night. In the sixth, Harris was pulled with two outs in favor of the lefty-lefty matchup with LHP Tim Mayza (H, 2). Spencer singled on the infield to load the bases, but Mayza induced a flyout of LF Devyn Bolasky to, once again, strand the bases loaded. Up 4-1, Dunedin added insurance with a run in the sixth. C Michael De La Cruz singled, one of his three hits, and eventually ended up on third with two outs. On a routine toss back to the pitcher RHP Jordan Foley, C Jesus Aparicio threw the ball away, allowing De La Cruz to score one of his three runs. In the eighth, his two-out triple scored on a SS Jorge Mateo error one batter later. The Jays begin a three game set with Lakeland in Dunedin on Friday with RHP Brad Allen against RHP Jeff Thompson. With the win, the Lugnuts avoided a four-game sweep and remained within a half-game of the Great Lakes Loons for the Eastern Division wild card with ten games remaining in the regular season. Perdomo (Win, 4-7) had lasted only one inning in his last start, allowing four runs to the South Bend Cubs on August 20th. He was markedly better on this night, striking out seven Dragons in six innings while allowing only a pair of third-inning runs (one earned). The Lugnuts victimized Dragons starter Austin Orewiler (Loss, 3-13) for leadoff doubles by Andrew Guillotte, John La Prise and Juan Kelly respectively in the first three innings, scattering solo tallies in the first, second, third and fifth innings. Guillotte added an RBI triple in a three-run seventh against Jeremy Kivel, closing out the scoring. Tom Robson pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Perdomo, departing after walking the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth. Andrew Case (Save, 8) struck out top prospect Nick Senzel looking to end the game. Senzel, the second overall pick in the June draft, finished the night 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. In the win, Connor Panas was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs; Jake Thomas went 1-for-3 with two runs scored; and Kelly finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI to extend his on-base streak to a team-high 26 straight games. Lansing opens a four-game series at Lake County at 7:00 p.m. Friday, starting left-hander Ryan Borucki (9-4, 2.56) opposite Captains right-hander Triston McKenzie (1-1, 3.42). The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium for a three-game series against Bowling Green from August 31-September 2. On Thursday night, it even surprised Jones. "I knew I was seeing ball pretty well, but you couldn't have told me I was going to hit three homers and have me believe it," he said. Toronto's 18th-round pick did leave the yard three times, also doubling and walking while plating five runs to lead Rookie-level Bluefield to a 12-5 win over visiting Pulaski. "It's a feeling of super excitement," Jones said. "This is the first time I've ever hit three in a game. I was glad the team could get a win too." The three jacks gave the College of Charleston product the Appalachian League long-ball lead with 15, pulling him ahead of Pulaski's Dermis Garcia with 13. His 44 RBIs on the season tie him for the circuit lead with teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the seventh-ranked Toronto prospect, and Burlington's Chris DeVito. "I knew the third baseman on the Yankees [Garcia] had quite a few [homers] and I knew how many I had, but I didn't know about anybody else, so that's news to me," he said. "It's special, to be honest with you. If you'd asked me two months ago, I never would have told you I was going to hit 15 homers. I'm just happy with the way things have worked out for me." More than half of Jones' roundtrippers -- eight -- have come since Aug. 10. "I wouldn't say I've found a power groove. It's more I've been patient at plate," he said. "That's been a struggle, especially at the beginning of the season being impatient sometimes, where I was swinging at pitches I shouldn't. Now, I'm being more confident and waiting for pitches I can do something with." There was one person in the ballpark who saw the hat trick coming after Jones knocked a ball over the fence in left field in the first inning -- right-hander Yennsy Diaz. "After I hit the first one, our starter said, 'You're going to hit two more home runs tonight,'" Jones recalled, "so he and I had kind of a special moment when I hit the third one." He knocked another solo shot in the fourth -- this time to center -- and lined an RBI double to the left-center gap in the sixth. In the eighth, the right-handed hitter went the other way with a two-run homer. "To be honest, I really don't know [what went through my head]," he said. "It was a great feeling to know it went out. It was just pure excitement. I've hit two [homers] two or three times before, but I've never hit three, so it was a great feeling." The huge performance marked Jones' second five-RBI showing of the month, and he set a career high with seven RBIs on Aug. 12. "It's awesome," Jones said. "A lot of credit goes to my teammates who have had good at-bats in front of me to put themselves in scoring position and given me the opportunity to drive them in. It's been a struggle at the beginning of the year to get runners in and get the easy RBIs that were basically given to me, but now I've settled down and it's been a lot easier." Guerrero Jr. went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, falling a homer shy of the cycle. Diaz (4-5) picked up the win, allowing a run on a hit and four walks while striking
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2016 Author Posted August 26, 2016 The minor league season is almost over but I will still make recap threads in the offseason for the various winter and fall leagues, AFL/DWL, etc. Not everyday but maybe once a week or every few days. Btw, MLB cut its funding to the Australian Baseball League, I'm not sure if prospects will be sent there in the offseason anymore.

I can update you on the AFL as I will be in Scottsdale from Oct 7- Oct 21. Hopefully the Jays send some interesting prospects there....anxiously awaiting the announcement.

King Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2016 Author Posted August 26, 2016 Which of our minor league teams are headed for the playoffs? Dunedin and Lansing are in the mix Bluefield in the mix GCL Blue Jays have the 2nd best record in the GCL (.717), 3rd place is the GCL Cardinals at .600, but the way the playoffs are setup only division winners get in, and they are 2 games back of the .745 GCL Phillies. So it does not seem like they will get in.
