A night after giving up a season high in hits, the Buffalo Bisons answered back with a 3-0 shutout victory, evening their series with the Rochester Red Wings at Coca-Cola Field Tuesday evening.

 

Starter Chris Leroux had his longest outing in nearly six weeks, hurling 6.2 innings of shutout ball while limiting the Red Wings to a trio of hits. The Montreal native fanned four en route to his eighth win, walking off the mound to a standing ovation from an exuberant Tuesday-night crowd.

 

"It's a long season, you have peaks and valleys. Hopefully I've found something here that I can end the season on," said Leroux, before mentioning the Buffalo faithful who braved the threating skies at first-pitch.

 

"It's fun to listen too. I was just glad they didn't yell my name while I was pitching when they were going around the infield and outfield. They were good and yelled it while I was waiting for the back-catcher, so good for them."

 

With runners on first and second, Aaron Loup took over for Leroux and ended any Rochester thoughts of a rally, inducing a ground-ball out in a lefty-lefty matchup with James Beresford.

 

Bo Schultz struck out a batter as part of a three-up, three-down eighth and punched out another in the ninth to earn the save. The hard-throwing reliever has allowed just one run over his last 12.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.04 after 21 appearances with the Herd.

 

Buffalo got on the board in the third as Andy Burns started the inning off with a walk, then moved into scoring position with his 11th steal of the season. A.J. Jimenez brought Burns around with a liner to left field to open up the one-run lead.

 

The advantage was doubled in the sixth as Pompey also led off with a walk and, two-batters later, was driven in by a Jesus Montero rocket off of the wall in straight-away center.

 

"Montero just drilled some balls tonight. That hit to the center-field wall was probably the hardest ball I've seen him hit this year," noted manager Gary Allenson post game.

 

In his eighth start while up with the Red Wings this year, Nick Greenwood was nearly equal to his mound counterpart. The veteran left-hander spread seven hits and three walks around seven innings and was charged with two Bisons runs.

 

The Herd tacked on another in their final at-bat via Matt Dominguez's second home run in as many days. The third baseman took the Neil Ramirez offering and sent it just beyond the outstretched arm of Adam Walker as the left fielder scaled the wall.

 

BISONS NOTES:

Prior to Tuesday's tango, Ezequiel Carrera's rehab with the Herd came to an end as he was activated by the Blue Jays…Jesus Montero finished the night 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to eight games while continuing to hold top spot in the IL with 135 hits…Now with 8 wins in 2016, Chris Leroux is tied for the team lead with Scott Diamond...The Bisons are 13-12 in shutout games this season.

Durham, N.C. — The contract of St. Paul Saints RHP John Straka has been purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays organization, the American Association announced on Saturday.

 

Now in his third season in the league, Straka is currently tied for second in the AA with 10 victories to go along with 77 strikeouts in 94.1 innings of work and a 4.48 ERA. He spent the previous two years with the Sioux City Explorers, where he assembled another 20 total victories.

 

In his last start on August 8 he hurled 7.0 innings allowing one run against the Gary SouthShore Railcats. His finest outing of the season came on July 31 at Lincoln when he tossed 7.0 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven. On July 17 against Fargo-Moorhead at CHS Field he struck out a season high 11. He’s gone at least six innings nine times and allowed three or fewer earned runs eight times.

 

Previously, the St. Louis Park, Minn., native was a 32nd-round choice by Texas in the 2013 draft out of North Dakota State University and spent the 2013 campaign in the Rangers’ organization.

DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (35-17) used four hits from 1B Ryan McBroom and seven combined walks from CF Anthony Alford and LF Jonathan Davis to grab a 10-1 victory over the Daytona Tortugas (30-20) on Tuesday night. RHP Conor Fisk (W, 8-3) tossed seven innings of one run, three hit baseball to earn the win.

 

While Fisk was doing his thing, the Jays went to work on offense. RHP Jose Lopez (L, 0-2) needed 94 pitches to get through four innings in which he allowed three runs. The Jays jumped to a 4-0 lead with singular runs in four of the first five innings.

 

After Fisk allowed his only run in the seventh, Dunedin added two more in the bottom half followed by four in the eighth.

 

Alford reached base every time he stepped to the plate, drawing three walks and contributing two singles. Davis walked four times, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases. McBroom was a home run shy of the cycle when he stepped up in the eighth with the bases loaded and no one out. He singled sharply to center for his fourth his and third RBI of the ballgame.

 

The Jays look for their eighth straight win and 11th straight at home on Wednesday with RHP Justin Shafer on the mound. RHP Keury Mella pitches for Daytona.

LANSING, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (23-27, 52-68) handed the Lansing Lugnuts (26-25, 62-59) a second straight decisive defeat, 12-0, on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

 

The Lugnuts' lead for the second and final Eastern Division playoff berth was narrowed to 2.5 games over the Loons with 19 games remaining in the regular season.

 

The Loons received an eye-opening performance from blue-chip pitching prospect Yadier Alvarez (Win, 2-1) who hit 100 miles-per-hour in tossing five no-hit innings, walking three and striking out eight batters.

 

Luis De Paula, 2016 second-rounder Mitchell White and Shea Spitzbarth combined for seven strikeouts in closing out the three-hit shutout.

 

Lansing starter Ryan Borucki (Loss, 8-4) gave up four runs in five innings - three runs in the first inning, and a Logan Landon solo homer in the fifth - while allowing six hits, walking three and striking out six.

 

The Loons poured it on against the Lugs' bullpen, scoring six runs against Tayler Saucedo in 2 1/3 innings and two runs (one earned) off Starlyn Suriel in 1 2/3 innings.

 

Great Lakes' 18-hit assault was headlined by first baseman Ibandel Isabel, who went 3-for-6 with a single, triple, home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

 

In defeat, Andrew Guillotte, John La Prise and J.C. Cardenas each collected a single.

Seems Berti might make sense to add to the 40 for a September callup. Among the quickest in the org and plays solid D at three positions. Makes solid contact and is a great bunter too.

Montero .432 in last ten games. No power though. I wouldn't mind giving him a chance over Smoak. Smoak in his last 47 games .159/.243 .624OPS. Time to move on.
