I think he could be a .300 hitter who plays pretty good defense.

Pompey looked awful in the majors catching the ball last time I saw him

An elite walk rate is great, but his line still only adds up to a 114 wRC+. That's not the kind of hitter you can sink $20M+ per year into when it comes with atrocious defense and major age-related decline risk.

I have no doubt the rate will go up once he gets back, especially with the lowered number of ab to offset. Game on the line, who I want up over him?

I don't think he'll ever be a good hitter for average. He could potentially draw walks, play good defense and provide value in other wise but I've never really anticipated him being a good hitter for average. How well he fields is really critical to his value right now. The early reviews about his defense were glowing and he looked good in what little I saw of him in AA but more recent reports have poured cold water on that. Seems like his defensive instincts are still a work in progress according to more recent reports though I don't have to tell you or anyone else that defensive reports are fickle at the best of times. We've seen guys like Pillar, Travis and Gomes outperform defensive expectations.

I would take the "Dalton has a chance to be a star" statement with a grain of salt. It's probably a combination of pumping his ego/self confidence, since he appears to be mentally unstable, and saving his trade value. Does anyone realistically think Pompey has a chance to be a star at this point? If he becomes an average regular you take that and run.

remember when you mocked me for me saying he was mentally fragile?

And your reasoning was his tweets were soft. Still equally hilarious it hasn't changed but you keep bringing it up. I'll laugh each time.

It wasn't based on f***ing tweets, get real. There were articles he was mentioned saying he struggled with the mental side of the game.

He hasn't destroyed every level he has played at. First off he strikes out a lot so I'm not sure you want that in a #2 hitter and why put extra pressure on the kid? Pompey is a guy who seems pretty fragile mentally so the last thing you want to do is try to make him feel like he has to be better than he is.

Well he has said in interviews that he often gets frustrated when he doesn't get a hit every AB and that even though he was playing well last year he wasn't having fun playing baseball. Also on Twitter he often tweets like a 14 year old girl who just broke up with their boyfriend. That sounds to me like he isn't the most stable mentally and that if he doesn't play well for a stretch of time could lose focus.

There is a ton of harm putting him in the 2-hole. First of all, there are 5 players better than him who would be better choices. Second of all, if he feels too much pressure hitting at the top of the lineup he could press and try to do too much which gets him out of rhythm and bad habits are created.

Obviously mentally unstable were probably the wrong words to use. Its not like I didn't want him batting second because I thought he would crumble because of pressure. He isn't the best hitter for that high up in the lineup which is what I said and I added that his mental side of the game is not the best.

Its probably bias from me going on Twitter only to see him tweet something soft. Tweets like this would make you think he is a 14 year old girl not a baseball player.

And like I said it wasn't based solely on his tweets....

You didn't say soley in your previous post, you made it sound like you never said anything about his tweets at all. My work here is done.

Pompey looks likes a 1 WAR player right now. Even though he has the athletic tools to be something close to pillar on defense, he seems like a guy destined to be a 4th OF.

Pompey will be traded in the next year. Shatkins has no plans for him in the future.

I think next time he's up is his last chance with the Jays, unless he takes it he's gone. He obviously has the tools, but if he's not in the right place mentally then a change of team could help him.

Saying that, if he isn't traded in the summer - give him a chance to win the LF job in spring training.

I see Pompey's ceiling as being a poor-man's Devon White.

Poor man's Demond Jennings. Decent at a bunch of things, doesn't really excel at anything.

Does Bautista even turn down a QO at this point?

Yes, because of pride.

BTS is correct. The real question is - with a first round pick attached to him....what would he get on the open market? Is anyone really willing to go 3 years $60M + 1st round pick? Could we see another Dexter Fowler situation?

Jays should let Bautista walk unless he comes at a massive discount, like a QO. Then give some big money to Edwin. Edwin is the true stud.

I would do 3/60 in a heartbeat for JB. I honestly don't see any team offering him any more then that. Doubt he takes a QO at his age. Unless he goes lights out in September and the playoffs he won't get anywhere near the 5/150 he thinks he's worth. I could see Boston giving EE something like 4/100 or 5/110. Don't see the Jays overpaying to keep him. With the Saunders has.been playing lately don't even know if I want him back.

Is there any word on how long Jose will actually be out? I'll be down in Tampa for the series Labor Day weekend and was hoping to get to see Joey Bats for possibly the last time in a Jays uniform. I haven't been able to find an update on his knee since he was placed on the DL.

15 days minimum... was the last word, he's rehabbing in Dunedin.

I would say that with rosters expanding in September anyways, there's an excellent chance that Bautista will be activated by Labour Day if he hasn't been activated before that. Whether he will be 100% is another story.

Thats a good point that I hadn't thought of. Unless his sprain is a lot worse than we thought it would make sense to bring him back September 1st with the rosters expanding. I know hes had a rough year but I think we need him back ASAP to help us in this playoff race!

But as a DH only. His injury being of the knee variety will only amplify his ineptitude on defense.

Right and going forward can we really put Jose in the field anyhow? Everytime we have him in the field some "freak" injury seems to happen. But I suspect he'll want to be paid like a heavy hitting RF and not like a DH.

At this point I'd almost prefer to just take the QO draft pick for Bautista and pursue Beltran instead. There would be no draft pick attached to him since he was traded midseason, and he'll be much cheaper while likely providing similar offense and having no qualms with DHing.

I actually agree with that but since its such a poor free agent class you better get him or you lose a lot of production.

It's been pretty well documented that Beltran hates being a DH and prefers playing the OF. He also hates our turf. He's not coming here.
