I was looking forward to being embarssed to be a bluejays fan when Bautista put up a monster season and the front office still refusing to pay him.

I think there's more to it than that. I suspect it's also related to how being rushed last year affected him. They're not going to let him flounder at the majors again even in a small sample. I wouldn't be surprised if he was left off the September roster. They want him to play like a major leaguer and only THEN get another shot.

In Spring training, Edwin goes about his job quietly, says nothing to the press about his contract other than he won't negotiate mid-season, and it was never brought up again. He ends up having a great season and will get a big contract from someone.

 

Bautista does the exact opposite, creates a distraction for no reason, says there won't be a negotiation as he told the club his number already (5/150), and he proceeds to have two DL stints, a bad season (by his standards), and a meme that will last a lifetime of him getting punched in the face.
