For the second time in less than a month, the Buffalo Bisons were swept by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

 

Three Riders' pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout as SWB took game three of the rain-abbreviated series by a score of 6-0 at PNC Field on Wednesday.

 

Brady Lail was impressive in his longest outing of the year for the Riders. The 22-year-old fired seven full frames of shutout ball, using a couple of double plays to face just one over the minimum. Lail struck out two without issuing a walk, improving his record to 4-2.

 

Since returning the Herd on July 5th, Casey Lawrence took his first loss in five starts. Though he was on the hill for five runs, the Pennsylvania-born righty was only charged with two as he struck out a pair of RailRiders over 5.2 innings of work.

 

Buffalo's two errors were quite costly as the International League's best-hitting team cashed in immediately in both opportunities.

 

After Jake Cave reached on an infield hit to start the third inning, Jose Rosario's bunt was scooped up by Tony Sanchez and thrown away, allowing both runners to reach scoring positions.

 

Lawrence nearly escaped the inning without harm after a line out and a fielder's choice out at the plate. But, .299-hitting Ben Gamel doubled in a pair with a line drive to open the scoring.

 

The RailRiders loaded the bases with one out in sixth and appeared to hit into a routine force out at the plate. However, the short throw from first baseman Matt Dominguez sailed high and let two more runners cross home.

 

Rosario then drove a sac fly to deep center for the third run of the inning, making it a 5-0 contest.

 

Pat Venditte hurled an inning and a third and fanned a pair in relief of Lawrence.

 

Ben Rowen also punched out two but not before surrendering a solo blast to Tyler Austin for the sixth run of the afternoon.

 

Johnny Barbato and Kirby Yates each threw an inning of scoreless relief to hold down Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's franchise-best 17th shutout of the year.

 

Now saddled with an eight-game losing streak, the Herd heads home to take on the division-worst Syracuse Chiefs for a four-game set.

 

BISONS NOTES:

The Bisons have now scored just five runs in their last six games…Buffalo has lost 10 of its last 11 to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and, at 5-11, have officially lost the season series…The Herd falls to an even 10-10 in games with a shutout…The eight-game losing streak is the longest for the Bisons since dropping nine straight from May 22-30 in 2003.

Harrisburg, PA - The Fisher Cats overcame a pair of deficits, but could not hold on as they fell to the Harrisburg Senators 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Ryan Lavarnway went 2-for-3 with a game-tying RBI double in the top of the 8th inning. Still, it wasn't enough as the Senators offense had an answer for the Fisher Cats at every turn.

 

Stephen Perez continued his heroics from last night as he drove a Shane Dawson pitch into the left-field bleachers to give the Senators a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. It was the second straight at-bat that resulted in a home run for Perez. It was the only blemish for Dawson who went six innings and struck out six.

 

New Hampshire got him off the hook in the top of the seventh inning as Shane Opitz lined a bases loaded single through the right side off Phillips Valdez to score Lavarnway and Ryan McBroom and give the Fisher Cats a 3-2 lead. Harrisburg would answer right back though as Kevin Keyes smacked his sixth home run of the year off Murphy Smith to give the Senators a 4-3 edge.

 

After Lavarnway's double tied it in the 8th, Harrisburg put runners on the corners with one out. Isaac Ballou then beat out a potential double play ball, scoring Khayyan Norfork from third, and giving the Senators a one-run advantage once again. The Fisher Cats would put the tying run on third with one out in the 9th, but Andrew Robinson got Opitz and Christian Lopes to pop out and end the threat.

 

The week-long road trip continues tomorrow night as the Fisher Cats travel to Richmond for the start of a four-game series with the Flying Squirrels. Wilmer Font is set to make his first appearance with the team after being assigned to New Hampshire on Monday. He was 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA in four appearances with Triple-A Buffalo. Sam Coonrod (2-2, 3.68) is slated to start the first game of the series for Richmond with first pitch at 7:05 PM.

DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (20-13) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase another late deficit against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (10-20). C Mike Reeves singled in the deciding run with two outs in the inning, one of his four hits while three other Jays collected three knocks on the night in their 10-9 win.

 

CF Anthony Alford's first three plate appearances resulted in extra-base hits. Alford tripled in the first and second innings, becoming the first D-Jay with multiple triples in a game this season. Alford's hits, along with a LF Jonathan Davis triple and more, cushioned Dunedin's early 6-0 lead for RHP Conor Fisk.

 

Fisk did not allow a run until the fifth where 1B Wade Hinkle took him deep to put Lakeland on the board. A pair of base hits and a pair of groundouts later, the Flying Tigers had cut the lead in half, 6-3. After a C Kade Scivicque leadoff double an inning later, LF Christin Stewart connected for his FSL-leading 23rd home run of the season to cut Dunedin's lead to one.

 

Lakeland finally captured the lead with a four-run eighth. RHP Adonys Cardona hit 99 on the radar gun for the first time in 2016, but he allowed five straight baserunners on a walk and four singles, including 3B Zac Shephard's which tied the game. With the infield in, CF Ismael Salgado chopped a ball over everyone's head into left field to give Lakeland an 8-7 lead.

 

RHP Dusty Isaacs (W, 1-0) relieved Cardona and recorded three big outs with a pair of runners on base after giving up a run-scoring double. The Jays went to the bottom of the eighth down a pair.

 

SS Richard Urena led off the inning with a solo home run to bring the Jays a run closer. After a Davis infield single, 3B Gunnar Heidt smashed a double off the left field wall to tie the game. With Heidt at third and two down, Reeves collected his fourth hit, a rolling single through the hole in right, putting Dunedin up 10-9. All three runs were charged to RHP Confesor Lara (BS, 2 & L, 2-2).

 

Dunedin looks for the series sweep on Thursday night with RHP Chris Rowley facing LHP Matt Hall at 6:30 pm.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Max Pentecost collected three hits and Josh DeGraaf tossed four scoreless innings, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (19-12, 56-44) bested the Lansing Lugnuts (17-15, 53-49), 4-1, in the opener of a three-game series on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

 

Kevin Padlo slugged a two-run homer in the first inning against Lansing starter Tayler Saucedo (Loss, 5-8), Brandon Lowe added a solo home run in the third inning and Kewby Meyer tacked on an RBI single four batters later to help the Hot Rods build a quick 4-0 lead.

 

A Ryan Hissey triple and Ryan Metzler RBI single cut the Bowling Green lead to three runs in the top of the fifth.

 

And DeGraaf made sure that the Hot Rods would not race away with the game, entering in the fifth inning and striking out a career high seven batters in 12 outs recorded, allowing two hits and facing one batter above the minimum.

 

In the ninth, the Lugnuts mounted one last charge. Pentecost led off against reliever Bryan Bonnell with his third single and moved to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Justin Atkinson drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Bonnell responded with strikeouts of Hissey and Connor Panas, ending the game.

 

Bowling Green starter Michael Velasquez (Win, 5-7) struck out nine batters in seven innings of six-hit, one-run ball to record the victory. Bonnell earned his second save.

 

The Lugnuts have lost ten of their last 13 games.

 

Lansing sends right-hander Justin Maese (0-0, 4.09) to the mound for the second game of the three-game series, a Thursday affair starting at 6:35 p.m. Central against Bowling Green Hot Rods right-hander Blake Bivens (4-2, 3.06).

Everett, WA. - Wednesday afternoon the AquaSox celebrated Family Get Away Day with a family friendly start time of 11:05am. A robust, sunbathed crowd of 4,379 took in game two of three between the AquaSox and the Canadians. Fans were also treated with Roberto the Magnificent, making his second appearance of the season.

 

Everett sent starter Reggie McClain to the hill in hopes of winning the series. McClain tossed five innings, only allowing 1 ER, while striking out 6 batters and walking none. Lane Ratliff entered the game in relief and threw two innings, allowing 4 ERs and walking 3. Joselito Cano kept the game in reach during the final two innings, throwing two shutout innings.

 

The AquaSox began the game by collecting five hits through the first three innings. Despite the early traffic on base, no runners were able to score. Vancouver capitalized on Everett's early struggles by taking a 1-0 lead on a J.B. Woodman RBI triple in the top of the fourth.

 

Jose Leal knotted the score at 1 in the bottom of the fourth by hitting a solo home run, his second of the season, over the center field wall.

 

Eric Filia extended his on-base streak to 17 games by crushing an RBI single that scored Bryson Brigman to give the AquaSox their first lead of the game, 2-1. Filia entered today's game ranking third in the league in batting average, at .331.

 

The Canadians tied the score in the top of the sixth making it 2-2 on a Cavan Biggio RBI ground out.

 

Nick Thurman gave the lead back to Everett when he pinch hit for Jose Leal in the bottom of the seventh. Thurman's clutch two out RBI moved the score to 3-2 AquaSox.

 

Jacob Anderson and Christian Williams delivered back-to-back RBI groundouts after Lane Ratliff loaded the bases in the top of the eighth. Andres Sotillo followed by hitting a two out RBI single to extend the Canadian's lead to 5-3.

 

The AquaSox entered the ninth inning with 13 hits and only 3 runs scored. An offensive outburst was blemished because of the 17 runners left on base through the first 8 innings. Eric Filia and the AquaSox changed the narrative in the bottom of the ninth.

 

Joe Venturino began the inning by hitting a double, and was followed with consecutive hits by Nick Thurman and Austin Grebeck to bring the score to 5-4 Vancouver. Bryson Brigman then walked to load the bases with no one out. With one out Eric Filia stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off 2 run single to give the AquaSox a series win over Vancouver.

3) Josh DeGraaf: DeGraaf pitched 4 innings giving up just 2 hits (0 walks or earned runs) with 7 strikeouts. The 23 year old RHP is quietly putting together a solid season out of Lansings bullpen.

He doesn't. Pretty well anyone can steal bases in the lower minors if you pick your spots right and have decent instincts. I wouldn't think much of it.

6'2 225 Daniel Palka stole 25 bases in High A last year. Doesn't mean he has speed at all. I listened to an interview and he said he's slow as f*** just ran on catchers who couldn't throw down that well or pitchers that are easy to run off of.

 

It doesn't mean anything. He's not going to be a SB threat if he makes it to the MLB.

Having good instincts and base running ability is never a bad thing - even if it doesn't translate into SB's at the ML level. His old man couldn't learn English after being in NA for like 15 years. Anything to suggest he studies the game a bit is a good sign IMO.
