THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Ok, I like this deal then. Hansel Rodriguez is decent but an easy price to pay if SD is eating most of the salary.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 I want to say good job for not touching Davis or Penticost but.... I have no idea who he is. Anyone know anything about him? King? He's probably our best prospect in the DSL.

A new brain and maybe Barry Bonds and Clemons on roids to replace Dickey and Smoak....

admin Site Manager Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Well I'll eat my words. I thought we were going to give up a lot when I heard they were eating a lot of his contract.

labadee Verified Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 We won the trade of awful first names
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 I can't fathom how Gibby can move Sanchez to the bullpen when he has won 10 games in a row. Makes no sense. Thole is mediocre and a backup catcher shouldn't cost them much to acquire. We really can't use Thole regularly as he is useless offensively. It's not Gibby's choice lmao. You guys blame Gibby for everything.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 So if the Orioles offered Ubaldo + 2 prospects (while assuming an extra 3-4 million in salary), I'm surprised the Padres didn't deal for that. Either those 2 prospects were absolute scrubs or the Padres are not eating as much salary as we are led to believe.
Bojangles Verified Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Does Melvin change his name back to BJ now that he is on the BJ's?

I've been telling people expect us taking on players who are overpaid with little price cut, we have no prospect capital so we have to compensate somewhere

That's another reason why I thought we were going to pay a lot, we weren't the only team. What did the other teams offer? Nothing? lol
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Aaron Sanchez is not the same physical person he was last year. He's 25lbs heavier and a lot stronger. There's no guarantees that moving him to the pen will prevent injury. His strengthening and conditioning program in the winter can be applied just like adding in another season of work. Pitchers frequently would jump in innings pitched years ago and it rarely resulted in TJS. Nolan Ryan went from 150 IP to 330 in one year in his early years, and maintained an average of over 270 innings for years. He took care of himself physically and is a big guy. Same goes for Sanchez. If there is a noticeable decrease in velocity and bite to his curve, then there should be reason to speculate. If he says he's fine and isn't feeling any discomfort during and after his starts, then let him go.

fireballW Verified Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 It's not only Gibby's decision. It's also a potenrial health concern. Aaron's workload has exploded compared to his last two years. He's on pace for far more innings than he's ever done. As for Thole: he has a unique skill that no other backup C reliably has. Unless Dickey goes, Thole is staying. A backup C is by no means a make or break move anyway, as much as it admittedly hurts to watch Thole play. MLB pitchers are getting injured more often than ever these days, this thinking isnt working. Let Sanchez start unless he becomes absolutely gassed. If he gets injured in the coming years we can live with it, he likely will anyway.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Hansel is good. We signed him with the ifa money we got when we traded Brent Morel (or some name like that) to the Angels after taking him in the rule 5 draft a few years ago. Also.. He's in Bluefield, not the DSL. But this is a fine trade. I like it.

I was listening to Hentgen talking to Bobcat last week and he was saying how if you're going to limit Sanchez's innings you should just sit him for the rest of the season instead of putting him in the bullpen. Don't ruin his mindset and routine he has going on and pitching in high leverage situations out of the pen may put more strain on his arm. Also, the workload is alot less predictable.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 So does substantial and colossal mean the same thing? Waiting on money exchanging hands. Hoping for atleast 40% of his salary. Wishing its half.

SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 BJ- .256 16 HRs 45 RBIs JB- .231 12 HRs 41 RBIs I guess this means Upton is better then Jose? Kidding aside, Uptons WAR is 1.5 to .9. If you take away two years of Uptons career he is a decent player, I like this trade.

It is like when Washington kept Strasburg out of the playoffs, then he still got hurt next year. Teams might as well use their pitchers while they have them and while they are healthy. I dont believe there are any numbers that clearly show one way or another but Id be shocked if Sanchez going to the bullpen the rest of the year reduces his chance of getting injured by any more than 5%.
