jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I wonder if Smoak could play another position when required, such as 3B or LF?. Lol please for the love of god don't put Smoak in LF.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 lol what a stupid deal. I was hoping he would be benched in favour of having Bautista DH. He's a below average hitter and fielder at 1st base who strikes out a ton. I mean 8.5 Million isn't much but still he's a dime a dozen player who you can get for cheap.

Literally a tick over being a replacement player. Might as well rotate AAAA guys on league average salary
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Gotta wonder what Shitabello thinks
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 This deal makes no sense. What can Smoak show now that he hasn't shown in nearly 3000 Plate Appearances.

It just seems like the kind of signing you make in December when you've exhausted all other options. The status of Bautista and Edwin is still up in the air, and guys like Trumbo, Moss, Beltan, Pearce, Morales, and possibly Thames are all more interesting. It would have been nice to not have $4.5M committed to Smoak before exploring all other avenues. Weird timing for a commitment to a very replaceable player.

Edwin has been better defensively than him this season and Smoak will be 30 next year and has a body that doesn't seem like he will age well. I think last year we saw what his potential was and he still was barely above replacement. I thought the 3.9 million for this year was a waste but this just makes it even more weird. Not to mention Bautista and Edwin aren't going to be happy hearing about this.

We're extending the contract of a redundant player who play the base with less defensive value. Smoak is a bench player in an elite team.
Nabru Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Lol please for the love of god don't put Smoak in LF. How about 3B? Left hander Smoak at 3B in the MLB!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 realistically speaking, if Smoak did become a free Agent what could he have gotten a 1 year $3 Mil Deal This deal is garbage, very questionable.

I don't care what Joey thinks EE on the other hand, would be nice to get him back no reason why EE and Smoak cannot share 1B/DH for a few more years

It's not something they needed to pursue or even be thinking about at this time. Had a Saunders extension been announced, that could have made more sense depending on the dollars and term, but this is just unnecessary
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 This FO is not that smart. I thought they were smarter. Meh, most of what they've done has worked out well: - signing Estrada - signing Happ - signing Barney - signing Floyd - trading for Grilli - picking Biagini in the Rule V - Carrera as the 25th man Revere for Storen has been a tire fire for both teams and the jury is still out on Hendriks for Chavez, but for the most part they've pushed all the right buttons.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 So much for thinking he was days away from being DFA'd lmao. Yea this makes zero sense.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 He's probably the most boring regular on the team. He's been here almost two full years, but does anyone actually give half a s*** about Justin Smoak? He just kind of takes up space. I'll be the one to admit that I've irrationally liked him for pretty much ever, but like everyone else I'm not understanding at all why this had to happen now.

Still seems like a really stupid deal. Even if you like Justin Smoak, who the hell is giving him a 2 year deal in the offseason?
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Sooooo they can sign Smoak but couldn't muster up the balls to sign EE in the off season, what the f***... is this real life?
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Sooooo they can sign Smoak but couldn't muster up the balls to sign EE in the off season, what the f***... is this real life? Well, Smoak literally costs less than 10% of what Edwin is going to get.

Maybe EE set a price and given his output this year it won't go down and they aren't matching. Still I'm confused why they'd extend him now unless they think he'll have value if they move him at the end of the year or something
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Sooooo they can sign Smoak but couldn't muster up the balls to sign EE in the off season, what the f***... is this real life? Only 20 million and change in average annual salary. But sure lets pretend its the same thing.

Both Bautista and Edwin have made it clear that they don't want to have contract discussions during the season so I don't know why we should be worried about their feelings on this.

He's not terrible. Just pretty much invisible.

Only memoral moment from him for me was this year when he hit the tying and walk off homers

Joey has known for months that he is headed for free agency I don't mind Smoak as a bottom 25 player, and agree the extension at this time makes little sense. But there are a lot of things we don't know and I'm gonna give Shatkins the benefit of the doubt here.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 The only thing I can think of is that Shatkins believes that Smoak's upside hasn't fully developed yet, and that he is going to become a better hitter over time.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Only 20 million and change in average annual salary. But sure lets pretend its the same thing. The point is we commited money that we could have used to pay EE/Bautista instead of going with a league minimum bat

I'm sure there's something in his statistical profile that suggests that he's a bit better than he looks. The last time I outright hated a decision they made it was the decision to keep Zeke, so aside from finding the timing curious, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
