TORONTO – Brett Cecil is likely to miss at least a month with a tear in his lat muscle discovered during an MRI earlier this week, another blow for the already beleaguered Toronto Blue Jays bullpen.

Cecil, the club’s primary left-handed reliever expected to be a key set-up man for closer Roberto Osuna, went on the disabled list Sunday with what the club described at the time as triceps tightness.

He had an MRI on Monday at the club’s facilities in Dunedin, Fla., where the injury to his lat, or latissimus dorsi muscle, was found. The lat runs from the lower back through to the armpits and the upper arm.

The injury is similar to the one that kept Aaron Sanchez out of action from June 15-July 24 last season. At first, the club planned to build Sanchez back up as a starter before switching him into a relief role, a process that initially led to an extended rehab assignment.

Cecil is 0-5 with a 5.23 earned-run average in 16 games so far this season and expressed a belief Sunday that the injury wasn’t a serious one, describing the MRI as something "just for peace of mind and precautionary reasons."

He said that day he first felt "a tug" in his arm while throwing warmup pitches on the mound May 3 in Toronto, and didn’t pitch again until Saturday after returning from a paternity leave. The thinking was that the extra rest would make the issue go away, but while he warmed on the mound at Globe Life Park, he felt the tug again and pitched through it as best as he could.

Chad Girodo and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte are currently the only left-handed relievers on the roster with Cecil joining Franklin Morales and Aaron Loup on the disabled list.

Morales, out with shoulder fatigue, had his $2-million, one-year deal become guaranteed Wednesday after he spent 45 days on the roster. He continues to build up arm-strength and there’s no timeline yet for him to get back up on a mound.

Loup (forearm) threw two-thirds of an inning Tuesday in his second rehab outing for single-A Dunedin, allowing two walks with a strikeout.

Second time in a few years our best reliever breaks just as he's hitting free agency. Him and Janssen are a nice reminder that extending these guys into free agency is generally a bad idea.

Yep. Santos with his big contract and Storen entering a FA year are also good reminders.

Janssen yes. I wouldn't want to pay Cecil what he'd get on the FA market with a big year, but if this pushes him down I wouldn't mind extending him.

Not too upset about this news.:o

Cecil himself before hitting the DL said ti was no big deal, just inflammation.

Just shows you should never believe players/management.

They even said Loup's injury wasn't a big deal, and look he's still gone.

Blue Jays are known for being horrible when it comes to injury diagnosis. Always say "yeah he's day to day we don't expect him to miss much time" then turns out theyre out for a month.

How do you come up with this stuff? Known by whom?

I just meant history has showed the blue jays underestimate a lot of injuries.

Edwin's quad, Lind's foot, Bautista shoulder last year, there is a lot of examples lol.

Do you follow other teams enough to know if this isn't something that every team does

But is there really a group of people who *know* for a fact that they are "horrible" at diagnosing injuries? If you don't have any actual evidence suggesting that, then it's a ridiculous thing to say.

Most of this stuff just comes down to the player themselves saying something. Teams can't MRI every player all the time without cause, it's not practical/how the technology works.

Yeah perhaps I worded it weird. Just meant they seem to always say its nothing to get concerned about and then it turns into a month long thing.

BJ Ryan was a while ago but that one was the worst.

He went from day-to-day to never recovering and his career being over.

I always found it most frustrating when the players would come back early and just make the original injury worse. I have ranted about Poulis in the past because of this. I have got the same "how do you know any of this?" kind of response too. Its hard to quantify but its something that should at least be explored. Maybe our head trainer isnt very good? Maybe he is legitimately responsible? I dunno. I dont think hes very good though.
