glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I said prior to the season I really don't care what the outcome to this season is. If the make the playoffs, great. If they win the World Series, awesome. However, if they fail, I want them to fail to the point where they can peddle off assets at the deadline rather than be stuck somewhere in between. Trading Edwin and Bautista mid-season might make a huge difference in shortening the transition time for the next Jays contender after 2016. The org obviously does not want them back unless it's short term, and they won't want to come back unless it's really long-term, so here we are.

Sounds like you would rather they be traded for prospects than the Jays win the world series.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Sounds like you would rather they be traded for prospects than the Jays win the world series. I think I would rather have them make the playoffs for the next several years rather than win the World Series this year and finish 3rd/4th for the next few years. Personal opinion though, others may prefer differently
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Sounds like you would rather they be traded for prospects than the Jays win the world series. Not really. I want to see a consistent winner. A World Series win is always the preferred ending to a season, but I'm also being realistic about what this team will look like after 2016. Like I said, either win a WS or fail miserably. I'm down with either scenario.
Statman Verified Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 20 mil/year for two years even sounds like too much.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 EE and JB provided full value previously on their contracts. Now, this team is taking all the risk and paying for past results which could decline drastically any year now based on both their ages. Either one is essentially a DH next year, or the year after. Unless Rogers is taking this payroll north of 150, signing either or to a massive contract would just further the hole this club is in already. No blue chip prospects, older declining players signed to massive contracts, is really not a good formula for sustained success. Getting them both traded and getting 2-3 solid prospects + 1-2 mlb ready players would be key to having this club compete for quite a while while not raising payroll. Now, if anyone has faith Rogers would love to spend 160-175 on this club, hell we could sign one and still have room to sign a #1 pitcher and a couple of solid BP arms, but that isn't happening with this ownership group.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Getting them both traded and getting 2-3 solid prospects + 1-2 mlb ready players That's for both right?
xposbrad Verified Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 That's for both right? Yep. I mean, we might get 2 solid prospects + 1-2 mlb ready players for both, considering they are both FA so maybe that's on the high end, but I think it can be done. Shapiro actually has pulled off some big trades before like Colon etc..
SAAviour Verified Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I think Bautista would bring a haul at the deadline. Can you imagine adding Bautista to your playoff bound team. Teams will be lining up to unload for him. I'm thinking it starts with a top 20 prospect, a top 100 and maybe a high ceiling long shot. I'm not ready to give up on this season yet, but when that time comes I'm looking forward to some prospect geeks making posts on proposed trades....hopefully it doesn't t come to that though.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Or they could pull a Delgado and refuse a trade

I'm down with either scenario. Thing is 2 or 3 years from now the Blue Jays could have a great team for 3-5 years and only make the postseason once or twice. In 2 years time the Yankees and Red Sox could be 95 win teams so even if the Jays are say a 90 win team their playoff chances will be worse. As we saw with the Nats last year and even the Astros possibly this year really good teams can be bad so even if you have a team that should win 90 games year in/out there are variables that happen.

King Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 How far away is Alford from being an option? Depends on how serious his knee/leg injury is. Maybe 2018 if everything goes right.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 How far away is Alford from being an option? Certainly not by then. Maybe a Sep call up next year if all goes right but this FO doesn't seem to aggressive. If he gets surgery on his knee that could push him back even farther.
