He caught the knuckler in spring training a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken. The decision to have Thole on the team instead of him was I'm sure totally an organizational decision (iow, Dickey got his wish), but that's one guy who might be able to catch Dickey and be a serviceable back-up at the same time.

What if Kratz just wasn't good catching the knuckleball? I remember seeing him struggle catching the knuckler in the spring fwiw.

Thole isn't that bad of a framer when you consider the knuckleball penalty. I don't really see how Kratz makes this huge upgrade if he's here over Thole. They're both s***** hitters and are only going to play 40 games anyway. The difference probably isn't even half a win.

I'll take it.

Kratz might be like 20-30% better than Thole offensively. And half a win is half a win.

Barry Davis

Thole took full responsibility for the final play "I have to catch that ball and I missed it" #BlueJays

If you're a man retires right now, Josh.

You related to Thole? Kratz can catch him bro, with a better bat.

That's what they get for using a slip'n'slide instead of a carpet...

How much does he lose catching the knuckler though? If the backup catcher is catching Dickey 3/4 of the time thats going to be a big part of his value. I don't like Thole as much as anyone but from the catchers we've seen catching Dickey he is by far the best one at it.

I don't really accept that catching a knuckleball as a tangible impact on a catcher's ability to hit.

I meant catching not hitting. Thole was able to get a lot more strike calls than Martin with Dickey on the mound even though Martin is the better framer by all accounts.

Christ...

Martin played 8 straight days coming into this game and the team doesn't have an off day anytime soon. You can't play your catcher that much and expect good performance. Especially now that the Jays have a high performance dept. they know how important rest and recovery is. As a catcher you can't just come cold off the bench thats not how it works unless you want him going on the DL pulling something.

He pinched hit 4 games ago for one atbat. Are you gonna go off on how hard it is to prepare to pinch hit and it takes a lot of you, comparable to a complete game?

He's started 12 of 16 f***ing games to start the season.

You're making it sound as if a catcher never comes in mid game because he can't warm up... I'd love to see the stats on pulled muscles from catchers coming in mid game....

Do you have a link to the numbers broken down like this?

Lol craziest stat of the season.

RA Dickey now leads the team in WAR with 0.4 and has 3.31 FIP in 20 IP.

This can't be true.

edit: wow, it's true. Not really a huge stat but still weird I guess. How does it change when you adjust for the performance of his personal catcher?

it isn't

he probably meant on the pitching side, though.

Thought I remember'd reading an article about it but I can't seem to find it. FWIW To the eye test it looked like Martin lost more than a few strikes low in the zone last year compared to when Thole catches him. (I know there can be a lot of error and confirmaiton bias with the *eye test*)

Busted... Kratz can catch him.

Even thought it was a tough loss, a lot of positives were revealed. The offence appears to be on the verge of breaking out with all the great AB's combined with a s*** load of bad BABIP luck. The bullpen looks like it may shape out to be better than originally expected. Storen's velocity seems to be coming back and his slider was really tight with late break. Floyd looks great. Biagini is actually a better pitcher than I expected. He has a great fastball with movement to go along with a nice curve and slider. His command looked really good, considering it was his first high leverage type situation.

We're going to have a great season..

One of the main fails behind signing Dickey was you have to keep on Thole. Virtually it guarrantees that two of your players will be below replacement. We rarely win a dickey/Thole game.

Storen was throwing 91 last night with it topping out in 93's. His velocity is still a major concern.

Storen never did throw much harder than that? He's not a mid to upper 90's type.
