Speaking of the pen, there's a good article today on bluebirdbanter about it. Short version, the pen actually has fairly decent numbers overall, but just like last year, it's pitching its worst at the worst possible time. The pen has been more unclutch than outright bad.

Yeah it's the ******** 0-9 start stat. They've been unclutch and the offense's struggles in scoring runs late in games makes it even worse.

 

I mean even last night the pen gave up one run in 3 innings. Not that bad.

I'd like to see the numbers on runs scored by innings - anyone know where to get this? The bullpen losses are also due to lack of late runs.

Since they used 4 relievers tonight I expect it to just be for a day then Tepera gets sent down Thursday for a bat. Maybe Montero or Burns.

Montero makes some sense but Smoak is playing his way in to an every day role so Montero would be nothing more than a pinch hitter which I suppose could be useful considering we start Goins/Barney everyday and Thole quite often. Could very well be Burns.

Dominguez really wasn't providing much value. There were numerous opportunities to use him as a pinch hitter the last couple of games and Gibby preferred to use his main pinch runner instead. I'm not saying Dominguez is good or anything but main bat off the bat should theoretically be his role. If he's not going to be used that way than he might as well be in the minors. This probably means we'll see Montero replace Tepera soon.

If you use Montero to pinch hit than you can actually save 'Zeke to pinch run. That's been an issue lately where it's quite obvious that Gibby has no faith in Dominguez.

The Yankees are actually positioned pretty well right now

 

- Sabathia, Teixeira, Beltran are gone after this season

- Rodriguez is gone after 2017

 

They have the bad Headley contract, but for the most part their bad long-term deals are starting to expire. And they have exciting prospects like Bird, Severino, Mateo, Kaprielian, and Judge.
