No the rolling extension is now void. If that's what you're asking?

I'm asking: if it is ultimately decided that Gibbons has done a good enough job in 2016, and returns in 2017 when his contract is up (ie. he isnt fired), does management allow him to manage as a lame duck in 2017, or do they negotiate an extension with him so he does not?

Overarching question - What is Shapiro/Atkins' view on lame duck managers. Beeston/AA clearly didn't like the concept enough to add in the innovative rollover. Does Shapiro/Atkins give him an extension through 2018 and beyond just so that he is not a lame duck in 2017

Dude, only Shapiro/Atkins, etc, can answer that question.

I just think the fewer times your boss needs to exercise an option on your contract, the better. The conditions of renewal are a bit of a tie to the FO's hands. They'd probably be more likely to ditch Gibby under AA's arrangement, if only to get out of it (otherwise they wouldn't have asked to re-structure to something conventional).

Okay so this post makes me look weird. I didn't realize the contract was for two years, which would cover the conditions of the original rolling contract for those years.

For some reason when I read things like "through 2017" I think it sounds far in the future. Derp.

Gibbons says contract restructure gives him leverage: "Never know when that San Antonio Missions job might come up." #Bluejays

I really don't understand any of this.

When Gibbons was let go the first time, nobody came knocking on his door.

It's not like he's in demand. If he isn't managing the Jays, he gets lucky to find an MLB 3rd base coach job, so not sure where all this negotiating leverage Gibbons seems to have, is coming from.

for Gibbons to be handed an extension next winter then i'd guess that the Jays have to go at least as far as they did last season (to game 6 of the ALCS) ... anything less could be viewed as a disappointing result (for those looking for one.)

He was actually the Bench Coach in KC after he was let go by the Jays. He's not like Cito who everyone saw through as a terrible manager, then he played the race card.
