i really don't think that the "talents" of Darwin Barney are any different. To me, this seems like a lack of confidence in the health of Devon Travis.

Maybe they expect Travis to be out longer? Likely league min. anyway. I would think Goins is the better fit to be the backup inf. since he's a LHH.

Goins could be useful as a guy you send back and forth to AAA depending on the health of Travis. Carrying him and Barney while Tulo and Travis are healthy would be silly, but having both in the org would be good for depth.

I don't mind this. I assume it's close to the minimum. Goins last year had a 92 wRC+ versus righties, and Barney has a career 92 wRC+ versus lefties. Both play great defense. There's definitely some value if platooned, especially since Travis is probably out for the first month or two, and Tulo has a pretty crappy injury history himself.
