BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Apologies if there is another thread on this. We have seen Cecil longer than anyone. He has had stretches of dominance in 2013 and 2015 and he has established that his stuff is more than a loogy. 2.5MM 2015 and FA 2017. Arb eligible again this season. We don't want to spend a ton on the pen but he is one reliable arm. I'd like to see us extend him on a 3 yr deal. Bad idea?

He's 28 years old. His rightly lefty splits are really very good. 16.7% swinging strikes last year and 15% this year....he's going to get a nice pay day come free agency. If he would give the Jays any kind of home town discount I would sign him in a heart beat.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 If he's willing to sign for like 3/15 or something, sure. But he has an Andrew Miller payday coming with another great season in 2016.

Hedges risk for him in case 2016 falls off and hedges risk for us that he has an awesome 2016 and walks for big dough elsewhere. He should take 3/15.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I hope so, but he should really be used in a Dellin Bettances type role going forward, 1+ innings if need be. Having him get out 1 single batter while Sanchez was given free reign all year was quite frustrating
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I would look to see what he could fetch in a trade.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 I would look to see what he could fetch in a trade. If you trade him and the notion of throwing Osuna and Sanchez into the rotation becomes reality....who is left as reasonably effective arms in the pen aside from Hendriks?

Another season like 2015, he'll get a big payday.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I would look to see what he could fetch in a trade. With one year left on his deal...tough call. Don't see the Jays flipping Cecil for a similar return like what Boston got for Miller in Eduardo Rodríguez, though who knows maybe Shapiro can make some magic happen!

Depends on all the moves they make. Remember, last year they traded a starter in Happ to plug the LF hole and a DH in Lind to get a guy similar to Happ, but cheaper in Estrada who ended up in the rotation. Just an example. Also, both Lowe and Hendriks are examples of guys that came out of nowhere to have very good years out of the pen. Now, I'm not saying to count on surprises, but I'm always willing to sell high on a BP arm. To be clear, I'm not saying give him away for nothing but $aving$. I'm saying see what you could get for him.

I wouldn't expect a return like E. Rodriguez, but Miller had a few months left on before FA while Cecil has a full season, maybe that brings the value closer than we think...or maybe not.

You're far too valuable not to extend, if you signed with Orioles Hangout there would be riots.

I mean, I get that AA wasn't perfect, but some of you guys are really gonna keep alluding to AA every time you want to praise Shapiro for a potential move? Anyway, to each his own.

What are you talking about? I wasn't slagging AA and thought he was a decent GM overall. I just meant that organizationally its sometimes easier to look at everything from ground zero when the is a clear and complete changing of the guard. To me that's just a fact and not something I'm cheerleading.

My handle is based on Big Cecil Fielder but I do want to see our current Cecil remain a Jay. He was about as dominant as ive ever seen us have as a reliever 2nd half.

I'm sure you didn't mean harm, but it definitely suggested that Cecil would be sacrosanct under AA. Anyway, all good.

Cecil isn't our only FA in 2017. Jose and Edwin are also. Shapiro is going to have re-evaluate the whole roster. You are the one who proposed trading Cecil and I was proposing extending him. I was agreeing with you in the sense that for the right price anyone should be available. I don't think Cecil was untouchable under AA.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I'd do 3/20 for him. He's been really really good for 3 consecutive years now.
