Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Let him walk after arbitration or trade him after next year
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 There's probably a window for getting him to forego free agency. There's probably no chance he does it two years from now, and less of a chance next year. You never really know with that stuff. Edwin was extended when he was only a half season from FA. Not saying I expect Donaldson to do the same but I don't think you act on the assumption that there's a definite window. That seems like a recipe for doing something rash.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I wonder if Shapiro would consider selling on Donaldson to replenish the upper minors. Probably not, but I could see him trading EE or Bautista this off season to put his own imprint on his new team.

Donaldson right now is most certainly a piece to build around for next year.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Martin/Tulo/Donaldson should stay for now. At least they provide you with some defensive value. Bautista and Eddy should be first to go if we're offloading payroll. A 3/4 of Tulo/Donaldson is still fap-worthy.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Projected to earn about 12M in arbitration this year entering his age-30 season. Is now the time to try to get him on a long-term extension? He has a clean record of health, and a skill set that should age pretty well. He'd probably be looking at 8 guaranteed years, taking him through his age-37 season. Would you go to 8/160 with him? Would he be amenable? I'd consider the 8/160 in the poll, but if it's much higher than that then I'd just go year to year. If we pony up a 5 year deal after 2018, it's still going to come to the same overall cost without all of the extra risk.

While AA was the GM I said quite adamantly that one of them (probably Encarnacion) would be extended, but now I'm not so sure.
