Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 So when do you guys believe Foley gets the call? Could be any day now. 40 man is full at the moment, but I suppose you could move Donaldson to the 60 day to clear a spot. There's probably a shitbag or two that you could DFA as well.

There will probably be a couple of trades soon too - e.g. there's no point in keeping Granderson (not that he'll bring anything of real value back).
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Isn't the 40 man at 39 right now? Looks like you're right, I just counted earlier and might have added one of the 60 day DL guys by accident.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Reid-Foley getting a shot in the rotation would actually make me tune in for some games. I hope they promote him soon. Same. His swing & miss stuff is so fun to watch and I've been missing it on a staff that generally pitches to contact. On that note, it would nice if we could get a new pitching coach in the OS as well. Watching Houston fix so many pitchers and dial up their k-rates exponentially (Cole comes to mind) makes me wonder why the opposite tends to happen to our guys (Stroman Minors to Majors comes to mind). They'll probably call up Pannone before SRF. What makes you think that? Pannone is far inferior to SRF.

BTS Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 they don't want to start SRF's service clock, and the more games they lose the better from here on out. I don't think a pitcher's service clock will (or should) be a consideration when deciding whether SRF should get MLB time down the stretch.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I don't think a pitcher's service clock will (or should) be a consideration when deciding whether SRF should get MLB time down the stretch. It's irrelevant because unless he really shoves, he'll be optioned to AAA at the start of next season pushing back his service time. The only thing that would matter is burning an option year.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I would love to see SRF finish the season with the Jays. He needs to be added to the 40-man in the off-season anyway. May as well get him some experience and he will have an opportunity to compete for a rotation spot in Spring already having MLB experience. With that being said they will likely go to Thomas Pannone first who is already on the 40-man or put Jaime Garcia back in the rotation.

Jaime Garcia won't be a Jay by the end of the trade deadline imo. He has a 10M option next year with a 2M buyout, and looks to be moving by mutual agreement to a full time reliever. The team will almost certainly be hoping to do with him what we did with Liriano last year.

The buyout for 2019 is just an additional encumbrance.

Are we assuming that because all pitchers break, we shouldn't bother trying to maximize their service time under the assumption of a best case scenario? That seems feckless. There's nothing to be gained from calling up SRF right now, even just from the perspective of trying to maximize 40 Man Roster assets.

Well you get a better sense if he can be counted on to be in the rotation next season. Its not like SRF is a number 2 starter either he's more of a number 4 with potential to be a 3.

Any savings on him would be worth it. But as Laika pointed out we would have to eat probably 90% of his contract including his buyout to even get back a PTBNL at this point. And that's assuming someone will want him.

As much as we like to think that it's easy for a front office to know how a player will transition from minors to majors there is still so much to learn. Next Spring he's not going to be facing a full line up of major league players 3 times through. Not to mention he's a very immature person...get him into the major league dugout to help with his maturity. We can't be treating SRF like an elite prospect. He's still likely a reliever, give him 2 months to prove that not to be the case.

We said the same thing about Liriano. The Jays will cover his salary, the team that trades for him will cover the buyout, and we'll get some low probability wildcard or something. Just my opinion.

He needs to be added to the 40-man in December anyway. 2 months of service time isn't exactly going to prevent us from keeping him longer or even send him into arbitration early. Nothing wrong with seeing what you have. Unless you want to continue to see a parade of s*** ballers for the rest of the season. I personally don't want to see Nick Tepesch. I would like a reason to watch the games down the stretch.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 Being added to the 40 doesn't mean service time starts I'm aware of that. But he will need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this winter. What's the difference between adding him now and December? The service time he gets will be minimal. I would like to see him a make a handful of starts right now personally. Reward him for his great year and also get a look at him.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 (edited) Unless you want to continue to see a parade of s*** ballers for the rest of the season. Actually, I would. Tank hard and write this season off. Maximize service time on every single legit prospect until this team is a contender. Improving this team from bad to mediocre this year while burning service time on actual prospects is a lose-lose scenario. Min-max that s***. Edited July 27, 2018 by Dr. Dinger

We take back an equally ugly contract... He's a lefty, and he's looked good as a reliever of late. We're not getting a top 100 prospect for him, but if we get anything of value, that's a plus.
