So if I'm understanding this correctly then we can go after the Braves prospects using next year's pool, thereby not impacting our available money for Otani.

Sure, but we've already got $3+ million committed to the kid we're linked to for next season, and I get the impression that teams would rather sign the guys they've scouted themselves.

An 18 year old Derek Jeter had just as bad a rookie season. As tempting as it is to dismiss Maitan, it's still way too early to tell though he definitely decreased his value and put more pressure on his bat.

Jeter was at least still a capable SS, whereas Maitan is just pretending at that position and by all accounts his body is ballooning even more rapidly than people had hoped. He's going to have to hit at an impact level, whereas someone like Jeter could at least still provide value by simply being a SS.

From MLBTR. I don't recall seeing this before:

  • Max Pentecost’s omission from the Blue Jays’ slate of 40-man roster additions surprised some, but Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports that troubles with the former No. 11 overall pick’s shoulder caused the Jays to leave him unprotected. Pentecost was shut down near the end of the AFL, which could make it difficult for a team to select him or to carry him for the bulk of the 2018 season. Pentecost has undergone multiple surgeries since being drafted in ’14 and has managed to play just 30 of his 171 games at catcher, spending the bulk of his time as a DH in addition to some work at first base. “We’re continuing to work hard to help Max be in the best possible physical shape and baseball shape he can be in,” said GM Ross Atkins of Pentecost.

Hindsight is 20/20, but drafting Trea Turner instead of Pentecost would've solved a lot of our problems right now.

I still like Pentecost' bat, but he's done as a catcher.

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of drafting catchers early in the draft. They take a long time to develop, and it seems like they fail more than other prospects do.

Juan: Your thoughts on Anthony Alford? He had another solid year statistically but dealt with injuries again. Has his projection changed at all?

Eric A Longenhagen: Nope, still an above average regular for me.

Bill: Do either or both of Alford (Toronto) and Dustin Fowler (Oakland) become starting OFs in second half of 2018, assuming they are then fully healthy? What do you expect long-term from these two when healthy?

Eric A Longenhagen: I think so. Fowler is an average everyday player for me, Alford above.

Graver: Vlad Jr has a ton of helium. What position do you think he plays when he makes the Bigs, and where will he end up eventually. Do you see any red flags that could cause him to fail or should I be all in on him?

Eric A Longenhagen: I think there's risk he ends up at 1B but he's going to hit enough that it won't matter.

Dylan: Which blue Jays prospect jumps in to the top 100 by midseason (ignoring those already there)? Pearson? Olivares? No one?

Eric A Longenhagen: If pro scouts see Pearson as a starter, him. I'll also throw TJ Zeuch some love, that guy can pitch and his stuff is solid.

Logenhagen seems to really like Alford.

Since we're out on Ohtani i really hope the Jays go after former Braves prospect Yunior Severino. He hit 125 wRC+ as a 17 year old in the Gulf coast as a middle infielder. He's also a switch hitter, pretty big upside.

He's only 17 I think which is pretty crazy

I love how a teenager is a bust.

Teenagers bust all the time.

But usually people wait until they're not teenagers anymore to make that declaration.

I believe that was tongue in cheek fellas, it's a Fantasy jab at the Hurl.

His value doubles for me cause he'll never cost me a spot on my farm. I would deal him for his pre-debut hype value though.

The Yankees have a ton of international money. They might go nuts on the Atlanta prospects.

Yeah, thought they'd have signed Maitan. Twins have a lot as well, as do the Rangers and Pirates, off the top of my head.

Most of the top Braves guys signed today, not with the Yankees. The Yankees are supposedly looking at the Cuban CF who defected recently.

I'm generally never a fan of picking high school pitchers early in the draft, but I'd be thrilled if we could get either Hankins or Liberatore next year. Liberatore is a little more polished to be a starter with 3 plus pitches, but Hankins legitimately has ace potential if he can develop a plus third pitch. Hankins fastball is legit 80-grade. Both have pretty repeatable and simple mechanics too.

I'd want to stay as far away from Kumar Rocker as possible imo.

Interesting, there's still some decent guys still available, so Kevin Maitan @ 2.2 to the Angels, Yefri Del Rosario to the Royals for 650,000 and Abraham/n? Guttierez to Phillies for 550,000... there's still decent targets in Ji-Hwan Bae, Yunior Severino, Juan Contreras, Yenci Pena, Guillermo Zuniga, Livan Soto, etc...

You know what Cuban OF Julio Pablo Martinez is asking?

Don't think this was posted but the top 50 of 2018 draft is up http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2018/?list=draft

Also, would love Nander De Sedas. His Video is with him in a jays jersey already!

disclaimer: i've never seen these guys play, you should probably just listen to Hurl's opinion.

De Sedas seems like a long shot to be around at #12, no? I'd also love the pick though

I predict we draft either Swaggerty or Conine at #12.

Who you guys got?

Well he's only 5'7, what do realistically expect?

Well, yeah. It's just interesting he's rated so highly.

Like if this was 10 years ago would he even be a top 200 prospect? Probably not.
