ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Good news for us! Didn't see this posted anywhere else, if it is, my bad. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13605428/new-york-yankees-starter-nathan-eovaldi-shut-2-weeks-mri NEW YORK -- The Yankees are shutting down starter Nathan Eovaldi for two weeks after an MRI on Monday revealed right elbow inflammation, the team announced. It is unclear whether Eovaldi will be able to pitch the rest of the regular season or in the playoffs. Eovaldi, 25, had Tommy John surgery when he was a high schooler in Alvin, Texas. He is 14-3 with a 4.20 ERA and is projected to be one of the Yankees' playoff starters if they make it into a divisional series. At the moment, the Yankees are a half-game behind the Blue Jays in the American League East. The teams have a four-game set later this week in which Eovaldi was scheduled to pitch. Manager Joe Girardi has held off naming his official starters for the Toronto series and declined to reveal why when asked by a reporter about what circumstances could make him change the anticipated rotation. Nathan Eovaldi has an inflamed right elbow, an MRI confirmed Monday, and he won't throw for two weeks. Anthony Gruppuso/USA TODAY Sports Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Orioles, while CC Sabathia is expected back from the disabled list Wednesday versus the O's, hoping a knee brace will aid him. Against Toronto, the Yankees figure to have Luis Severino, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda start three of the games. Rookie Bryan Mitchell could take the other start or the Yankees could try to piece a game together among relievers. Adam Warren, who was an effective starter earlier in the season, is not stretched out enough to go multiple innings. The Yankees could use Tanaka on a normal four days' rest for the final game of the Toronto series, but for the most part, they have tried to give Tanaka an extra day of rest during the season. WFAN Radio first reported that Eovaldi was being shut down.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 So what are the projected pitching matchups for the upcoming series against the Yankees??
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Author Posted September 8, 2015 Really hoping we get Sabathia for a game...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Really hoping we get Sabathia for a game... Yep, we do just fine off CC
Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 This is a break for the Jays...but we need to take care of the next 2 games versus the sox. I am still not full convinced of our pitching outside of price.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Really hoping we get Sabathia for a game... We won't. Hes pitching Wednesday
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 We'll get Pineda and Nova for sure
Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 We'll get Pineda and Nova for sure 2 of those guys have owned us have they not? Need to pitch well that series.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 2 of those guys have owned us have they not? Need to pitch well that series. Yes, and yes
Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Yes, and yes ugh, stressed over that series already lol.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 if we are going to face Tanaka I'd like to throw our worst starter against him. Depending on who you ask, that could be Hutch/Buehrle and considering his dud performance yesterday (and him not likely being able to go past 5, Stroman)
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Good point. Tanaka does seem to be worst against average-below average pitcher. Like his concentration and drive is not the same and starts throwing too many fastballs in there. that really wasn't my point - my point is that I'd rather have my best pitcher used in a game that they are very likely to win. I don't have confidence in the Jays doing anything against Tanaka.

Wanna give yourself a chance to win every game, so you match their best against our best.

We beat Tanaka the last time we faced him in Yankee Stadium Edit: as the post above me states, we've beat him both starts he's pitched against us in Yankee stadium this year
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Have the Jays not won two Tanaka starts this year? Yes but the first one was early on in the season and we beat him good. The 2nd one was fluky and the 3rd was utter domination.

Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 "Against Toronto, the Yankees figure to have Luis Severino, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda start three of the games." gulp, jays got to bring their A game. Our pitching is regressing after the hot start after the all-star break, I am not comfortable with this pitching staff minus Price.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 Honestly...just split and sweep the Braves. Yanks are due for a loss or two against the Mets. But first and foremost, take care of the Sox the next two games.

Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 true I'm ok with a split, have to win the next two games in Boston. Fingers crossed we miss Miller in Atlanta. Didn't he throw a CG in Toronto?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 how was the 2nd one fluky he had a 5.81 FIP Can you even use xFIP in one game? It was fluky because IRC the only hard hit contact we had was the two homers. One was a bad pitch to Bautista and the other was a real good pitch Tanaka made.

So your strat about saving your best guy for a scubbier matchup doesn't hold up.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 What's more concerning with the Yankees is Girardi's bullpen usage. Wilson/Betances/Miller have been used 4 of their 5 games (with Betances going 20+ pitches back-to-back.) You can't sustain this indefinitely.. they're going to be burned out by the postseason. And of course, Girardi has no trust in anyone else in the bullpen, with only rare occasions of Warren and Shreve.

And now Warren is leaving the pen for the rotation because of a lack of depth. And also, Tex is looking like he will miss the rest of the season, and is even uncertain for the playoffs..
