The Cleveland Indians elevated Mark Shapiro from general manager to club president in Oct. 2010, expanding his duties to include business as well as baseball.

Nearly five years later, Shapiro has emerged as a strong candidate to join the Blue Jays in a similar role, according to major-league sources.

The Jays have spoken to Shapiro about replacing outgoing president/CEO Paul Beeston, sources say.

Beeston will retire at the end of the season. The Jays have been seeking a replacement for him since at least last December, when they talked to the Orioles’ Dan Duquette and the White Sox’s Ken Williams about the job.

Foxsports is saying that Toronto is talking to him about replacing Beeston. This is the guy that you should all want as president. Very smart, and fairly "new school". Cleveland at times has been one of the most progressive front offices in baseball.

Reasons for Shapiro to do it: better city, higher payroll, and a raise (obviously).

FWIW, Indians fans would likely think - good riddance. It's easy to pluck executives from a struggling team.

100% agree...which is why I hope it won't happen.

Why exactly does Beeston even do anyway???

Waves to the guy at the side of the stage, drinks & smokes in his office with old lawyers.

Would we have to give compensation to Cleveland?

Technically no since its a promotion and since they might be looking to make a change anyways. I highly doubt they would go full Angelos over this. At most maybe a David Carpenter-esque player.

Can you imagine if Shapiro fired AA? You'd lose your whole reason for hating the team.

Shapiro is the President of the Indians, Antonetti is the GM, so its not a promotion. Its a lateral move but i can't seem to find any updated details on his contracts, he might be available on the open market next year.

Job title no, but he's moving to a (probably?) better environment.

He was in money ball

Brad Pitt called him to make a deal :-)

Didn't "Billy Beane" actually go to Cleveland to negotiate a trade with Shapiro where he meets "Peter Brand"? I know there was the phone call scene too

Well, its not like we're the Dodgers. The unwritten rule among front offices (which dicks like Angelos don't follow anyway) is that you don't get in the way of promotions, a shift from Cleveland to Toronto with the same job title strictly speaking is not a promotion.

compensation might be a moot point anyways, his contract might be expiring or he and Antonetti might end up getting canned.
