LTR Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Props to Hutchison for pulling it together after a rough 1st inning. The Hutchison hate has to stop. The guy has been completely unlucky. Abnormally high BABIP. Abnormally low LOB%. Those two things pretty much explain his high ERA. There's nothing more to it. He's pretty much the same guy he's always been, his command is the same, his control is the same, his BB rate is the same, his K rate is about the same, velocity about the same, his luck is not the same. I can't believe people actually want to demote him... give your head a shake.

This is a great example of why only focusing on advanced stats to evaluate a player can lead to misguided assessments of players performances.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Another solid job by the Jays board. Though in fairness to John it was obvious he was attempting to engineer the reverse jinx. I stand behind what I said...was only 3 runs off.

I don't think they're advanced stats, it's fairly logical that he's been mostly unlucky.

There is a fine line between unlucky and just plain terrible....he is right on the edge, comments one way or the other is reasonable at the moment.

He didn't raise his arms, that was the last Donaldson walk-off where again people weren't happy with his enthusiasm level. Why the f*** do people give a s*** about this again?

I don't think they're advanced stats, it's fairly logical that he's been mostly unlucky. His fastball is awful right now. He routinely leaves it up in the zone and it has very little life to it. Pitching from the stretch seems like it affects his ability command it down in the zone consistently. His slider also looks nothing like what he showed the 2nd half of last season. It's lost bite, and I'm sure theirs a Stat/metric to measure its disparity from last year. Hutch is struggling big time, and assigning luck as its reason for said struggles is what I take issue with. I'm kind of excited to see how exit velocities off the bat translate to player evaluation, I think adding these new metrics might help to better explain how guys like Buehrle can be successful. One thing is for sure, it's definitely not mostly luck based as you seem to think.

FIP, xFIP, BABIP, LOB%... needs literally no explanation. The only number you can look at is ERA, apparently. You're hopeless, Lol.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Hutch is effective when he pitches up in the zone
