Multiple scenarios: 1.) Tepera gets sent down cause he's the rookie 2.) Loup gets sent down cause he's s*** 3.) Travis hits the DL and we only rely on Martin/Valencia as back-up infielders
flafson Verified Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I think Kohlrabi been pretty decent at 1B, probably better than Edwin but not better than Smoak.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 yes, it's too bad we don't have a guy on the bench who plays stunning D at first and switch hits. Do we really think Smoak's defense is stunning? Fangraphs has him as a negative defender every year. I know their defensive thing isn't the best, but I'm not sure 'stunning' an accurate verb...perhaps only when referenced in comparison to E5 and Colabello. Average comes to mind for me...but you guys are smarter than me. Learn me.

Idk the exact numbers, but for example, a 0 def SS is a below average defender at short and a -5 def at 1B is good. It's not a reflection on him, but the position he plays. E: going by last few years, Smoak is just around average

Average comes to mind for me...but you guys are smarter than me. Learn me. "Defense" involves positional adjustment to provide total defensive value. "UZR" is a measure of the player's actual fielding, no positions involved. So if you want to see how good Donaldson is at defense, you'd look at his UZR, and it's +10 runs or whatever. So that means his glove has been worth 10 runs or like 1 win. But if you want to see his total defensive value, you'd look at defense, which includes the fact that he's a +10 defender at third base; obviously, if he was a +10 defender at first base, that wouldn't be as impressive and would impact his total defensive value, despite posting the same UZR. Hope I explained well

Some on this board have over-inflated Smoak's talent level (most likely driven by a hate towards Gibby and his choice to play others ahead of Smoak). I'm all for giving Smoak more playing time don't get me wrong, but he's not as good of a player as some people want to believe he is.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Jays still in on Carrasco apparently. We surely don't have the prospects as far as I see, but its fun to think about. Do it AA!
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 You guys so smart - thanks for keeping me around here. All interesting stuff. It's also kind of funny to reference Smoak as a switch hitter when we seemingly don't let him bat right handed ever. I appreciate what Colabello's done for the team, but I would have loved to see what Smoak could do given full time at bats vs. both LHP and RHP. Maybe there's no "growth" left and maybe he's destine never to be a full time player anyway, but getting 25 at bats vs. LHP in a season is going to kill any possibility there was.

Hard to imagine it not costing Stroman at this point. Can't really see it making sense for both teams otherwise.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Stephen Drew may be DFA'd today. Do you guys think the Jays should try him as the back-up? He has a ridiculously low BABIP. Guess it depends on how you feel on Goins.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 He has a ridiculously low BABIP. Which he's had for over the past 600 PA's....when is it no longer bad luck?

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I was impressed with Gibbons moves yesterday. Cola and Danny V were done as soon as a RHP was in the game. used the pen well as also. Hawkins is a great addition to our pen. I like the idea of using him as a 7th inning guy.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 He is Goins, get it? Goins will never hit as many HR as Drew has hit this season lol
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Goins will never hit as many HR as Drew has hit this season lol and yet he essentially useless
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I'm just saying...an unsustainably low BABIP for a guy who previously was a solid player, along with average defense..is he better than Goins? Definitely not as handsome, though.

Agree on all accounts. Solid game. I also want to say Bautista and Edwin have been a disappointments this season. I really hope they pick it up, we need them to. High praise to AA for acquiring Martin, Donaldson, and now Tulo... w/o them we'd be basemen dwellers.

admin Site Manager Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Below average hitter + no great defender anymore. Hitting .320/.355 vs Righties. Platoon with Valencia. Good for late game pinch runner too.
