Jays have Inquired about Tyler Clippard

The Blue Jays have asked the Athletics about the possibility of trading for reliever Tyler Clippard, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets. The Blue Jays are seeking upgrades for both their rotation and their bullpen, Crasnick reports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote yesterday that Clippard might become a target for the Blue Jays, who were also interested in Clippard last offseason.

 

The Jays have gotten good results this year from Roberto Osuna, Liam Hendriks, Steve Delabar and current closer Brett Cecil, but their bullpen has been an area of concern throughout the season, and they’ve recently also had trade discussions with the Phillies regarding Jonathan Papelbon.

 

The 30-year-old Clippard would be a somewhat lower-wattage addition, but he’s in the midst of an effective season, with a 3.20 ERA and 7.8 K/9. His walk rate is elevated at 4.6 BB/9, however, and he’s allowed fly balls at an alarming 64.9% rate that’s somewhat atypical, even though he’s never been a ground-ball pitcher. He’s saved nine games in his first extended stint as a closer since 2012, when he saved 32 games for the Nationals. He’s making $8.3MM in his last year before free agency.

Clippard's been awful this year. Lots of flyballs and lower K rate. If you can get him for nothing, then fine, but don't give up an asset.

They always do. When they started the fire sale last offseason, I was hoping the Jays would approach them for another trade, when I wanted them to target Doolittle, Moss and Reddick. It just comes down to whether or not the Jays have the guys that the A's want, and whether or not they'd be willing to give them up if they do.

 

I don't see them chasing a trade for a guy like Reddick though, not before they do everything they can to find some arms.

how much control does he have left? If its just this season I wonder if Saunders + Castro would get it done. Reddick would make this lineup amazing since he mashes RHP and you could slide him in the middle of the order which makes it harder for managers to gameplan the later innings.

Reddick still has two years of control (he's a free agent at the end of the 2016 season), and he won't come cheap.

 

I do think that if the Jays and the A's were to match up as trade partners and they really wanted to get it done, the Jays could plug most of their holes in a trade with the Athletics in a blockbuster for Kazmir, Clippard and one of Zobrist/Reddick. Outside of Reddick, all of the other three guys are free agents at the end of the year, and Clippard has been bad and Zobrist has been s***. Maybe that would create an affordable trade, I don't know. I do think Kazmir would probably cost less than someone like Cueto, so that should be an avenue that they explore, if not a bigger trade.

No. Travis is where Lawrie was after his great first cup of tea in the majors at the end of 2011. We already know that Lawrie didn't come close to living up to those lofty expectations, and we haven't yet proven that with Travis. We also don't yet know if Travis is anywhere near as injury prone as Lawrie is.

Travis for Lawrie straight up might not make sense, but if we are talking about a realistic trade with the A's, those two guys would fit well as part of a bigger deal.

He's been bad (not terrible) for 25 innings this year, and he was excellent for five years and 400 innings before that.

I understand your logic but just as an example, Delabar was lights out for about 2 years and i been scared to have my eyes open when he pitches this season. Pen arms are very volatile, you want to have both good numbers but almost just as important is having a hot hand.

Can't you pretty much put him anywhere? Play him at 2B while Travis is out. Play him in LF a bit... Play him in RF if you want to give Bautista a day off. Can he play short if you want to rest Reyes? Just rotate him around.

 

It's nice to have that type of player on the bench, but I don't think its worth it considering the

1.) cost to acquire him

 

2.) the players he will be replacing during each game may produce more than him.

Delabar is your generic high Sw-Str guy. Problem is the command is pretty bad.
