Maybe they can guarantee Hamels' option in the final year of his deal? That might be incentive for his to waive it. Or he just may not want to play in Canada. It happens.

I never understood that sentiment...it's not like it is a third world country, and you are nowhere from the US border.

Wouldn't surprise me if there are still some Americans who think we live in igloos. They probably think Roger's Centre is one giant igloo.

I imagine having to go through customs more frequently would be a bummer. Although when I went to Vancouver the customs agent that we had was very pleasant. But it did add on about 45 minutes to our travel time.

Jays have the complete package, Reyes healthy, Martin behind the plate, they need an ace like Hamels to stabilize the rest of the rotation

You severely underestimate American patriotism. Not to mention the Canadian dollar is s*** right now, and players are always worried about the "taxes" ********.

With the Canadian Dollar being low its actually a more attractive place for Americans. They're living expenses are in CAD but they make USD so they are gaining almost 20%.

100% right about the Ace part. I'd rather Samardzja or Cueto then Hamels though. Cost will be a lot less. The Brendan Mccarthy trade of last year would be perfect if a similar type of deal is out there.

Living expenses in Toronto are way higher than anywhere in the States, except for New York City. So it's a wash either way. It's the income tax that turns players off.

Except the added cost of living cancels that out.

Income tax in Toronto is middle of the pack apparently. The difference in all teams really isn't as much as it is made out to be since they tax you for where the games are being played. So if you are in Tampa for 18 games and 18 days you are subject to Florida's income tax laws.

Yes but I think player perception is more in line with what Gruber says than with reality.

I don't think anyone would or should argue Norris+ for someone like Hamels. Norris for Paps however..

Also, if you are happy with the arms/depth, why trade for Hamels? Go after CarGo.

Because you sign Hamels you can definitely let Dickey walk next year. Also, if there is still a surplus of youngster, some pitching can be traded for position players if necessary.

I'd trade Norris+ for Hamels every day of the week.

If the traded is coming close, I am pretty sure GM_AA, or someone, would contact those players and their agents and ensure they know TO isn't the taxed black hole rumours indicate.

Why would hamels not want to pitch for this team? We would be serious contenders with him and run support should be plenty.

Maybe, this is the reason --->

I'm still not understanding why the BP need wasn't addressed in the offseason instead of sending a prospect to PHI to cover salary.

They should give us him...make up for the fleecing they gave us on Halladay

Per MLBTR - move if needed:

By Steve Adams [June 10, 2015 at 5:57pm CDT]

The Phillies “are ready” to trade Jonathan Papelbon and have had recent discussions with the Cubs and Blue Jays regarding the five-time All-Star, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, there’s currently nothing close, and talks between the Phillies and both of those teams are at an impasse, per Rosenthal.

The Phillies are willing to pay a significant portion of Papelbon’s contract if it means receiving better prospects, and since speaking with the Blue Jays last week, they’ve increased their scouting of Toronto’s minor league affiliates. The Blue Jays are on Papelbon’s no-trade list, though Papelbon said months ago that he would have interest in pitching for Toronto. The Jays are currently one game above .500 and just three games back in the AL East, despite the fact that they’ve endured bullpen struggles nearly all season.

As for the Cubs, their front office knows Papelbon well. Both president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer worked for the Red Sox when Papelbon was drafted, and each has a respect for his work ethic despite his somewhat abrasive personality. The Cubs aren’t committed to Hector Rondon as the team’s closer and are trying to add multiple late-inning alternatives, hence their recent signing of Rafael Soriano.

Rosenthal hears that the Phillies prefer to deal with the Blue Jays as opposed to the Cubs. I’d imagine that moving Papelbon to Toronto could require the Phils to eat more cash, as Toronto has more budgetary constraints. They’re said to have between $5MM and $8MM to make in-season additions, though Papelbon is earning $13MM this season, of which $8.3MM remains. It seems unlikely that the Blue Jays would want to place all their eggs in this one basket by spending all of the money they have left on Papelbon’s salary. Additionally, Papelbon’s $13MM vesting option has to be a consideration, as if he were inserted into the ninth inning in Toronto, he’d almost certainly reach the 48 games finished needed to lock in that final year.

No doubt. I'm pretty sure I've read reports of the Jays doing this very thing in the past. They probably have people on the payroll who are pros at breaking it down. That being said, you can't always make people listen.

Boston is expensive f*** especially for a town that's not a big metropolis. I'm surprised it doesn't rank worse than Toronto. It certainly would be one of the worst, if not the worst, in terms of cost relative to size.

On the top bar where the B / I / U are, on the right side, look at the smiley face. Three over, the big square. Click it, click From URL, then uncheck the check box. Then post.

Outside of Paps rubbing some people the wrong way, I don't see why people would say "no thanks" without even knowing what it would cost. He would make us better and address a key weakness of our team. I wouldn't get a Papelbon jersey but I would be fired up if we got him.

AA thought he had Sanchez in the pen as well. With Stroman in the rotation, he thought he was building a young shutdown crew of Sanchez-Castro-Osuna

I like Paps because he's decent + it opens up more opportunities to use Cecil.

The Boston metro population is (well, as of 5 years ago) 4.55M (11th largest between the US and Canada), whilst Toronto's metro population is 5.58M (7th largest between the US and Canada). According to certain sources, Vancouver, SF and SD are all more expensive than Toronto, and smaller than Toronto, whilst Calgary is more expensive than Boston (which was 8th most expensive, behind all the aforementioned cities, plus NYC and LA. Boston isn't small, although it's spread out a bit (which is a good thing), but its cost of living is generally in line with its population rank.

For some reason, I had the idea that Boston wasn't that big stuck in my head.
