Statman Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 This just isn't reality. Jose Reyes turns almost every play into a suspense as to rather he will mess it up one way or another. Although there are many Goins haters on this forum, Goins is a very talented SS, much better on the field than Reyes. It is reality. Sure, Goins is a better fielder (better mechanics/more accurate arm) but even a declining Jose Reyes is still A LOT better at every other aspect of the game. You would have to be crazy to replace him with Goins.

And then you have his remaining contract which is another 1000 times more money than Goins.

Right now there is no other player in this organization that can play that position better when you factor in all phases of the game. It's not close actually even with the defensive woes.

Even if Reyes was gone and we had a lesser Goins at SS, who do you sign with the money? AA is the problem, not Reyes.

The next in line is Goins and no coach or GM puts Goins ahead of Reyes.

At least get our pitching in order.

Stop being so narrow minded and respect others opinions.
Smokey Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Yesterdays lineup included 4 scrubs (at LF, CF, RF and 2B) who have no business playing everyday and some of you retards have a bigger issue with Reyes and want him replaced permanently with a replacement level player who has an extremely limited upside. Great f***ing idea!

Great f***ing idea! The positions you mentioned are only suffering because of injuries. The point here is Reyes is an everyday player and he's single-handedly costing us ball games.

You think putting in our available below-replacement Goins or replacement level Kawasaki for Reyes will cost the Jays less games?
Smokey Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 (edited) The positions are only suffering because of injuries. The point here is Reyes is an everyday player and he's single-handedly costing us ball games. That's not entirely true. They're Playing Pillar at CF everyday which has nothing to do with injuries. He would be a pretty decent 4th outfielder but because AA suddenly views him as "one of the best outfielders in baseball", he thinks it's a good idea to keep him there regularly. So as a result, the team is now reliant on replacements who have no business playing the OF and as we've seen the last couple of games, there's been several easy balls that were dropped that led to runs. This incompetent roster management is costing the team a lot more games than Reyes and his mental mistakes ever could. I don't particularly enjoy the thought of paying Reyes $22m but what other choice does the team have at this point? Eat his salary and replace him with Ryan f***ing Goins? I'm not saying there is a clear solution to Reyes either, neverthless the guy is costing us games. There's no way his defensive/baserunning miscues are being fully captured in his WAR (which seems to be the only counter argument anyone has around here anymore).

This isn't a challenging concept sir. Are you f***ing retarded? I just wrote a paragraph explaining that Pillar should be the primary 4th outfielder and that they're only relying on guys like Portobello because they've decided that Pillar is suddenly a stud CFer. Is that a hard concept for you to comprehend sir??
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Reyes is frustrating - paid too much vis a vis value - a chandelier - sub par on D - terrible BB ratio right now - prone to brain dead decisions on base paths. But at this point for the Jays now he is our best current option as SS and he can still be a dominant offensive force for periods of time when he gets rolling. This commentary should go in the anger/rage vent thread imo. He just isn't THAT bad.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 For all of the people saying the OF is s*** and has been costing the team games, they haven't really. The "crap" OF replacements have actually produced even though they are bad players. Collabello and Carrera have 0.7 fWAR, and Valencia has been worst half a win as well. There is no doubt these players are replacement level but they have produced at an above average clip while in the OF which is more than what Goins has done in the IF.

Unfortunately, there is a serious problem with this way of thinking. The Blue Jays management seems to follow this rationale, that offense is the most important quality in a player and defense is secondary. Offense isn't the problem for the Blue Jays, it is the defense. Ryan Goins is playing because Gibbons knows that he saves runs on defense.

Again, we'll remind you that WAR includes defence, and that even with incredible defence, Goins still costs the team more than he benefits them.

I would agree with this if Colabello hadn't cost us two games with his D (not sure if and how many games he won with his bat). Don't mind Carrera at all, can't believe people were totally blaming him for losing a ball in the sun... could happen to anyone.

For me, it's more about CC looking lost as he tracks balls, being afraid of the wall (in excess) and just all around not looking confident out there. Pillar just makes it look so easy, I want him in left. Center could be Carrera. JB in right.

They are relying on Pillar in CF now (when yes, he should be a 4th OFer) b/c Pompey looked completely overwhelmed at the plate (as does Pillar - but Pompey hopefully has a future as a starter in this league).

Pillar was moved to center way before Pompey was sent down in order to "maximize his value". Obviously injuries have been a factor but this outfield was never deep enough to begin with and giving your only competent backup outfielder the starting CF job hasn't helped the situation. Anyways, I don't even know why we're going over this... The bottom line is that improving the outfield, or even more importantly the pitching, should be a much bigger priority than improving the SS position.
LTR Verified Member Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 Is Pompey's confidence shot for good? I know he had a triple last night but otherwise he's had 2 XBH in nearly 90 AB... pretty atrocious. That's like Josh Thole territory, worse.

Doesn't help that he had attitude problems when he was younger.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Whenever I look at Reyes' #'s and contract I tell myself that at least we're not the Rangers. From what I gather, they have Andrus for 6 more years at a total of $103 million. Approximately $15m a year. Currently has negative war value and was only 1.1 last year.
