Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 Apparently there was no Mike Wilner show yesterday, none today (no game), Mrs. Olerud363 has left me alone for the weekend so I will try and catch the show tomorrow. It is more exciting then Rangers game 7. Since there is no Mike Wilner I went to the fangraphs site to see if the crap Wilner says is true or not Pillar = Devon White - it seems fangraphs rates Pillar as replacement level (0.1 WAR)... Devon White (91-93) was consistently 5.5-6.0 WAR a year Why the difference between Fangraphs and Wilner?? Maybe I will ask him tomorrow. Me: Mike the latest fangraphs update has Pillar and Pompey as equivalent at 0.1 WAR.. if Pompey proves healthy for Buffalo should we bring him back?? Mike: (Condenscending) ... No... (pause for dramatic effect) c'mon.... You don't take Pillar out of the line up for one little slump... If we did that in 92 Derek Bell would of played center field And you know how that would of worked out?? It wouldn't have. No. Pompey is right where he needs to be. Pillar is catching the ball and more. That's what you need in centerfield.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 I really thought we left those that care anything about Wilner behind at that other board.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 the only listeners he gets are hatters wanting to bash him.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 I really thought we left those that care anything about Wilner behind at that other board. I am fascinated by him. I only end up listening to the Mike Wilner show a few times a year... and he never fails to provide ridiculous insight, like Pillar sort of equals Devon White. It makes me wonder what kind of s*** he talks about the 95% of the shows I miss. Also... in 2012 I got the chance to listen more as I was working on the road and had more time. That year there was a Colby Rasmus fan that called in from Alabama or somewhere. He called in every night. It was weird. How did he get through so much??
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 It's not meant to be an unbiased talk show, his job is to promote and defend the Jays to get viewers. Ever since his little run in with Cito he's been like this. This is exactly it. He used to be more objective, and I remember him actually questioning JPR moves with JPR was ON the show with him. Since he got suspended for questioning Cito he's been pretty much intolerable with his steadfast defense of the Jays. Blue Jays Talk should be renamed Defend the Blue Jays Talk, because his natural instinct now is to find whatever facts he can spin to use to defend the players, Gibbons, AA, without giving any real objective thought to it. If that is his job description, to defend the Jays and promote viewership, then thats fine. He has a family and needs a salary, and the cito-induced suspension made him fear he could lose all that. Just don't hide behind objective journalism, and say that youre speaking facts, when youre really spinning facts. The epitome of Wilner was Russell Martin comments last Oct/Nov, when a caller asked him if the Jays should sign Martin because he was Canadian, a winner, a good leader, good defensive catcher for the young arms, decent bat, etc. Wilner went into his usual diatribe reserved for any one who isnt associated with the Jays, saying he had a low OBP the few years before last, he would cost way too much, he would want way too many years, leadership and 'winnership' are overrated and there was no such thing, we had Navarro, being canadian is irrelevant, etc. etc. etc. Now we hear the exact opposite: He's a winner, great leader, great framing skills, helps the young arms, Navarro only had one year left and is a valuable backup/DH, brings out fans because hes from Toronto/Montreal. etc etc. etc. When that same caller called this May, too call him out on his hypocrisy, Mike was like Well....Hes a Blue Jay Now!!! What a joke.

I want to throw people off a cliff who beg for "small ball" and endless bunting myself.

It really used to be a decent listen, along with the lulzy callers, but I stopped listening altogether, shortly after he was suspended.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 The guy's simply toeing the line, can't fault him in that, he has a decent gig, that pays the bills and feeds his family, no big deal really, well, unless you continue to listen, that lies on you.

You can fault him though if he's toeing the line but trying to pass it off as objective journalism, which it seems he is , since it looks like blocks/cuts off anyone who questions his objectivity. As I said before, if his job was to promote viewership by defending everything they do, so be it. Just don't act holier than thou when called out for it.
