gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Ryan Goins so far -0.2 WAR this season. Not holding his own. Yeah, coming from a place where Saunders is a 0.7 def WAR and Goins is at -1.8.. How the f*** is that even possible?
StroShow Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 If he puts up 4 runs or less it doesnt matter how he does it The point is that he will not sustain an ERA in the 3s if he is walking 7 per 9.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 The point is that he will not sustain an ERA in the 3s if he is walking 7 per 9. That is correct, but isnt the 7 bb/9 dominated by the 7 walks he had in one game. Not counting that game isnt it roughly 5bb/9
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Sanchez will be a statistical anomaly this year. So there..

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Averaging close to 7 BB/9 is unacceptable, even for a 22-year-old starting pitcher. He needs to be demoted - he clearly is not ready for pitching out of a big league rotation yet. Stats really do not matter if you Win. Good or Bad it's all about winning in the end! That's why you play the Game! f***
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Anyone? BTS, King, GD or any other minion wish to shed some light on this? TIA.. Those kinda stats take about 3 years to stabilize. I wouldn't read too much into them at this point.
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Anyone? BTS, King, GD or any other minion wish to shed some light on this? TIA.. Sure. You're looking at UZR after a 66 inning sample.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Sure. You're looking at UZR after a 66 inning sample. Isn't UZR applied in the overall WAR equation?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Anyone? BTS, King, GD or any other minion wish to shed some light on this? TIA.. Encarnacion's Off WAR is -2.7 and Valencia is at 2.1. Do you want to shed any light on that? There's nothing to say. We're barely a month into the season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Isn't UZR applied in the overall WAR equation? Yes. But it doesn't matter what Goins' UZR is because he's such a bad hitter and baserunner. He'd need to be like a +20 defensive shortstop to have any kind of value, but he's probably not a +20 defensive shortstop. That's Andrelton Simmons good.

We're barely a month into the season. What? Based on their performances to date, i'd say that is somewhat accurate. Goins' defense doesn't match anywhere near a -1.8 def WAR so far.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Tell you what we should have a Epic Fail poll, thus far which has been the bigger Fail Shanchez who hasn't even pitched one full year as a starter for the jays or the after one year that crash and burn Breakingblue blog ! Lol Sux it! Back to the Hive.

Goins' defense doesn't match anywhere near a -1.8 def WAR so far. Flip it to +1.8 and it takes him from a below replacement level player to a replacement level one... still not contributing either way. That tends to happen when you hit like a pitcher, and half of the game is offense.

BTS Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Well, this is the argument. Can Goins at least be at league replacement or better. That's not the argument. The argument is whether he can actually warrant a roster spot. To warrant a roster spot he needs to be better than replacement. A 0 WAR Goins is part of the problem. So far in his career his at -0.4 fWAR, with well-regarded defense.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Did you see Joe Kelly pitch today?.... Sanchez is worse I disagree, when Sanchez throws strikes batters don't square him up, Kelly just sucks. Actually to be honest there's a chance Sanchez sucks just as bad, there's also a chance he finds control and becomes an Ace. Why you all can't agree that he has been lucky this year, not pitching well, but his stuff is electric and deserves a chance to start is beyond me. Anyone ready to put him in the bullpen right now is just as bad as anyone who saying he is having a great season. Neither is right, so let's see what happens.

Nobody wants him blowing games in the bullpen. They want him in AAA trying to figure out how to become a good pitcher.

Jayday Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Sub-replacement level play isn't acceptable just because a guy is young. Remember the ever popular " Travis is only 21 " posts ?
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I rather he walk guys then give up double and homeruns. I would quite rather he didn't to that.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I would quite rather he didn't to that. Yay, irony!
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 lol jesus christ it's just incredible. Funny thing is that they'll be wrong like always and not learn from it at all. See: Goins, Ryan; Thames, Eric.

It kind of feels like the worse Goins is at hitting, the more highly people regard his defense because...I don't know
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Did you see Joe Kelly pitch today?.... Sanchez is worse Sanchez has a materially better ground ball rate and his line drive rate is materially less than the average. His change up and fastball command needs to improve and the statistical pool isn't large enough to come to conclusions, but you can see his stuff. The movement is there. He isn't easy to hit. He's gotten out of jams due to some luck, but also due to the stuff he throws. His ability to keep the ball on the ground and limit line drives is also part of the reason he gets out of jams. It isn't all luck like some would suggest. The Jays don't have a better option to throw out every 5 days so I'll go with the stuff the kid has. He is getting valuable experience and is still developing. I don't for a second think he has peeked and can't cut down his walk rate or refine his pitches.
