BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Took my kid to little league and then melted down watching the rest of the game on PVR after. Sooooo glad Gibby was sac bunting to pad that massive lead in the 4th now. (insert further sarcasm). We all knew the pen was weak....mgm knew the pen was weak....and guess what?...the pen is weak. shock-er...the Spring means little. A f***ing crapshoot. Never a truer phrase was said. These games will really hurt if we have a sniff in Sept. Although with a retooled Bosox team I think 2014 was our shot.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Touche. You own him too right? Have you seen his last 5-6 appearances? He's dominating like only Chapman dominates right now. I did, but I needed a starter with Waino getting ready to die so I dealt him. For McCarthy. lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I did, but I needed a starter with Waino getting ready to die so I dealt him. For McCarthy. lol Well... that's probably not going to work out for you.

King Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Basically, he's saying "Get me some dang help for the pen! Osuna and Castro are overmatched!" He has better pitchers sitting in the bullpen watching Castro pitch every game.

Despite the win, Kelly wasn't that great. Ogando was the one who basically kept the Sox in this game, and is pretty much their best reliever right now when their bullpen isn't getting overused every night because their starters fail to go deep. BTW, Boston has won every series opener so far, strangely enough. With Buchholz and Porcello going tomorrow.. the Jays have a shot to rebound. Toronto isn't this bad.. but give Castro and Osuna a break, DFA Francis, and get a better arm up here (Guilmet? West?)
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Gibbons said something different after Saturday's game. His putting Castro in the 9th tonight shows us he meant what he said. Now, if he was trying to prove a point by putting Castro into a tight game, then I have to think most players don't appreciate it.

jays76 Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Lol the Gibbons crapshoot remark sums it all up. Besides stating the obvious that Castro shouldn't have been thrust into the closer role due to inexperience and lack of pedigree I think everybody's confidence is down in the pen. There's been a lack of clear cut defined roles and too many mix and match games, it was discussed to death here in the off season that having a true "closer" isn't of great importance and is overrated, but it's also hard to quantify how much the lack of a real closer effects the confidence of the other relievers and settles down the pen. Honestly Cecil is lost right now and his confidence has been undermined. Plain and simple this was all predictable months ago and AA should have known better, and more importantly he should have done something about it instead of watching option after option pass him by. For all the flak Gibby's been getting I almost feel sorry for him (I did say almost) considering he's trying to make chicken salad out of chicken scratch most days, AA needs to be taking a lot of heat right now as well..

This is a good post. As much as it might make sense to not have defined roles, the players aren't necessarily going to be comfortable with things being run that way. The closer spot means a lot to the players, even if it shouldn't. To them, it's a coveted position to be earned. You have to put in your time, prove yourself, and maybe after a few years you'll get a chance. In Cecil's mind (and and likely the rest of the team's), he's earned the spot. He's the longest-tenured member of the pen, he's been dominant for two years, and he was anointed as closer in March. To pull him from the spot after one game, and hand it to a rookie who hasn't pitched in AA, is going to piss him off. And it's going to piss off a lot of vets on the team. He's managing people here, not numbers. I've always appreciated his pen management, but haven't been on the same page with him at all this season.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 It must also not sit well with the players to stick with Castro after demoting Cecil after 1 blown save. So it begs the question: is this ship sinking?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I just find it funny how Cecil lost the closers role after 1 game but Castro has kept his after being s*** this season Look at all his outings: https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/9903/ The majority of his outings have resulted in at least 2 base runners.

Assign spot to the players raises their confidence and improve their performance. Jose Iglesias is a good example.

Maybe Cecil isn't an ideal closer and he's better suited to being a setup man but give him a shot at the very least instead of handing the keys over to Castro, I'm baffled by this every day. They should have looked to get a closer early in the off season if they weren't bringing back Janssen, I still have no clue how AA seriously thought he could come into the season hoping for the best with his pen in disarray??

Cecil has been humiliated by Gibbons treating of his role. Castro's fastball is flat and he really doesn't have good enough command of anything else. teams have seen this and he's going to be brutalized until he learns to command his secondary pitches.

I would like to point out that Gibby's bullpen management was on-point in that first NY series. Even in the 2nd game blowup, he put the right guys in the right situations, but it just didn't work out. After that series in NY, he has been terrible with his management of the bullpen.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Innings pitched: Cecil 5, Osuna 10.1, Castro 9.2. Who would you have more faith in, your proven relievers or 2 rookies who haven't even pitched a full season at the single A level?

Yup send him down and bring up Delabar, hand the closer role back to Cecil to hopefully build his confidence back up. Osuna's been my favorite reliever this year, the kid is one cool customer but I agree he's getting run ragged.
