intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Has the pen really s*** the bed 6 times now? From memory: Game 2 @ NYY Game 1 vs. Braves Game 2 @ Rays Tonight Not to mention how unnecessarily close the blowouts against the Rays and O's ended up becoming in the two home series.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 No, because they still managed to score 5 runs against him, and when he was hit, he was hit hard. They walked a lot too, and none of the hits were gimmes. So it's okay for the Jays to strand 13 runners in a 1 run game?

Also gave up the go ahead run against rays April 14, Cecil blew the lead against the braves April 17 Thats 6
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Just a reminder that no one asked for: This team's offense literally stars Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion, Russell Martin, Jose Reyes. The team's closer is fresh up from A-ball. Setup man too.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 So it's okay for the Jays to strand 13 runners in a 1 run game? No it's not of course but that's not a point of strategy so why would you debate it?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 So it's okay for the Jays to strand 13 runners in a 1 run game? If you go into the 8th inning with the lead, you should expect to win that game. That's what good teams do. They close games out. You aren't always going to get hits with runners in scoring position, it happens, but the offense scored the necessary runs. Relievers didn't hold up their end of the bargain.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Also gave up the go ahead run against rays April 14, Cecil blew the lead against the braves April 17 Thats 6 I don't consider giving up a go ahead run s***ing the bed necessarily, but okay. And yes, I mentioned the Braves game.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 So it's okay for the Jays to strand 13 runners in a 1 run game? reyes, jose and ed responsible for 8. jays had 2 on and no outs, Pillar tried to bunt 2 times and then got a hit. then Pompey popped up a bunt. Reyes then GIDP. Gibbons played for 1 run when they had kelly in the shitter
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I don't consider giving up a go ahead run s***ing the bed necessarily, but okay. And yes, I mentioned the Braves game. Lets say it is 4, i wonder if its 4 if Andrew Miller is this teams closer. Probably cuts that number in half and this team is 11-9 right now.

Probably cuts that number in half and this team is 11-9 right now. Unlikely. This is the first 9th inning loss. I mean, sure the bullpen would be structured differently, but ninth inning blown saves haven't been the problem (although there have been awful ninths in blowout games).
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Gibby was saving Cecil for a save situation, lord have mercy. How did he regress this much over a year?

All I will say about the pen is that they didn't come north with their best crew...but it's still a small sample size and because the pen was bad over a SSS it doesn't mean it will be all year. I hope panic sets in for them and they overpay for a reliever. Jose Dominguez and his 0.00 ERA could be had for a little piece like DSJ.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Gibbons has been heavily involved in 2 of the last 3 losses. Tonight, he bunted up by 3 with 2 on and 0 outs, not only once, but twice! The 2nd time, he knew Reyes would follow Pompey so even if Pompey got the bunt down, Reyes was unlikely to drive the runner home as he doesn't look good at all hitting right handed versus rhp. Reyes should've been pinch-hit for with a runner at 3rd and 1 out in the 7th (I think). I wonder if he still thinks that "Castro's been damn good". Now, in fairness, Reyes is playing because he doesn't want to go on the DL and the team doesn't have the guts to force him to.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Estrada might actually be a very good reliever. Better let him rot on the bench while someone who is probably a very bad reliever gets into countless high leverage situations. Just swallow your pride and waste the option year on Castro. Hard to blame him. After pimping him all spring, comparing him to Betances, handing him a 25-man spot on a silver platter, and then anointing him closer after one game, burning an option year before May rolls around would be a giant embarrassment. These are very good points, do you think it's plausible that Gibbons hands are tied and was told to use Osuna and Castro in these high leverage situations to save Alex's pride? I mean how does Gibby go full f***ing derp this season, he used to be nails with match-ups and using his entire pen. You raise a great point, and I think it's not out of the realm of reality, to be quite frank.

Did dele bar out pitch either of the kids - no. Plus he's shown what he is

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Gibbons seems to have been trying to prove a point tonight by using Castro. Anyway, let's not beat a dead horse. I think they're likely unwilling to admit a mistake right now, but if they do decide to do the right thing, they might want to get Castro into a low pressure situation to try and send him down on a high note. On the other hand, if he struggles....lol, sort of a catch 22 situation here.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Moves that need to be made ASAP: -Reyes to DL or slotted to the 9th spot -Castro either demoted to 7th inning role or demoted to AA
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Perhaps an overpay on Papelbon. Plus paplebon isn't 2012 paplebon

Plus he's shown what he is Guillmet and West were/are their best options. They weren't given a chance because the kids were a better story. The stat I can't figure out if it's close to the actual future number is that right now the Pen has a 35% GB rate. That would be great in SD...not in the Rogers Centre or most of the parks this team has played in.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I think Gibby admitting that Castro and Osuna don't need to be here. AA feeling the pressure
