BTS Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Who would you have suggested? It's not like there's an excess of middle infielders throughout the league. I would suggest a new GM if the current one can't find an above-replacement backup shortstop in 3 years.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Santiago, Izturs, and Goins suck. Kawasaki probably sucks. AA has had three years to find a suitable second shortstop to provide value in a utility role behind Reyes and the 2B revolving door has opted not to. That's on him. Goins is not a suitable bench player? I think you're expecting too much for your bench players. A bench player that can play the infield and hit well is not a bench player. That's a starting shortstop/2B.

The combination of his skills results in a player that doesn't belong on a major league team.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I'm not sure there's been 15 starting shortstops that were above replacement in any of the last 3 seasons. probably even less at 2B. wat
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 He's replacement-level. Possibly worse. If you can limit his PA and maximize his defensive innings (i.e. use him largely as a late inning replacement) then he comes out as a small plus.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Who would you have suggested? It's not like there's an excess of middle infielders throughout the league. Ben Zobrist...same guy I suggested all off season. Someone who can play multi positions.

If you can limit his PA and maximize his defensive innings (i.e. use him largely as a late inning replacement) then he comes out as a small plus. Yeah maybe. It's hard to see him ever be used consistently like that here. Reyes will never be pulled for a defensive replacement, and if Reyes is hurt Goins just defaults to the full time SS role.
Steveorama Verified Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Not worried about defensive side, Goins will be fine, maybe even an improvement. But asking Travis to bat leadoff for a month seems like a big ask, to me.

That's on him. tell me how many teams have a 2 war utility infielder on their bench. There are lots of teams starting middle infielders that won't be 1 war players. Goins' bat won't be as bad as it was last year. He's somewhere between slightly negative to 1 war player if pressed into regular duty which is right in line with most teams. I believe he can post a slightly positive WAR this year. He's posted a .704 career .OPS in the minors. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest he could come around with the bat and post a .620 OPS bat in the big leagues which is more than fine for a backup when the defense is as good as goins' is.

Several teams. But that's beside the point because I'm not saying AA should have a league average backup ready. I'm saying he should have an above-replacement backup ready. Goins is not that.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Apparently 33 players posted .5 fWAR or better last year. Two of which were Ramon Santiago and Jose Reyes. I was thinking league average not replacement. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=10&type=6&season=2014&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Yeah, with several others capable had they been given playing time. Having a Util guy who can play short and maybe give you 10 runs above replacement over 400-500 PA is not too much to ask.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Sounds a lot like Muni, Santiago, pre 2013 Izzy or even Goins. Muni maybe. I like Kawasaki as a bench player, and I'd have him up over Goins. Not sure how he'd look if asked to defend short everday and face LHP and RHP. Platooning the two while Reyes is out would be ideal as far as internal options go.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Not the worst idea. You would need a manager that knows what a reverse split is though. To bad we don't have one of those. Anything to keep Goins away from LHP. I never want to see him flail away at a lefty again.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 couldn't the team have retained Momma Lind for health awareness position with the team? And papa Rasmus. Both in consultancy roles.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Reyes may play again after the weekend. If he doesnt go on the DL, he will bat right handed until he heals completely... sounds like an excellent plan, playoffs should be easy to make! http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12711547/jose-reyes-toronto-blue-jays-cracked-rib-weekend-series
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 lol He will just bat right handed until the pain goes away. Sounds like a solid plan..what could go wrong
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Surprise, surprise, Reyes is hurt. It seems kinda dumb that he didn't get a day off since he tweaked the rib last weekend.

Better option than Goins Marwin Gonzalez Jonathan Villar Cliff Pennington Eduardo Nunez
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 So who do we want to see called up if Reyes does go on the DL? Matt West?
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 So many good players to claw back, lol. Keep Yan Gomes. Keep d'Arnaud and Syndergaard. Keep Marisnick, Alvarez, DeSclafani. Stroman Hutch Syndergaard Alvarez Sanchez Desclafani Happ? Bautista Pompey Saunders? Pillar Marisnick Donaldson Hech (yuck) Travis Edwin Smoak Gomes/d'Arnaud + a lot of money to sign some players. WOAT post.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 lol Reyes is going to look awful batting right handed vs RHP. First breaking ball he sees is going to be a hilarious swing.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Funny to think that Reyes is naturally a right handed hitter. His swing looks so much uglier from that side.

You forgot to include the probable top 5 picks for stinking in 2013 and 2014 so add another top talent. Plus, doubt they would've traded for Donaldson given they would've stuck with their rebuilding plan sub in Lawrie, Graveman, Nolin and Barreto coming fast. Alright, let's move forward.
