Spoonovic Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Thoughts on the new turf? Looks like it plays really slow.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It's definitely slower than the old stuff. It seems to play a lot more like real grass.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 We'll never see another triple hit again.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 You would love a turf that played just like grass but I don't know that slower than grass is more egregious than faster than grass (which is what it was before). This will make life easier for the likes of Jose Reyes but it will suppress some offense. Probably not good for contact hitters like Travis.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I like it. It should dramatically help our defense, and since we're a team built around the home run, might not hurt our offense that much.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It looks amazing but plays really weird and infielders are getting shot in the eye from that simulated dirt s***. Seems like somebody didn't do their due diligence on this one. But it does make for interesting baseball. Blue Jays should find a way to exploit it, like Maddon in Tropicana. lol.

That was what I thought too, it should help our good defense shut other teams down and then it becomes a power match which I will take us over anyone else to win.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 This field provides us with +2-3 WAR in my estimation. Do you mind if I put this in my signature?
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Wait... you don't think Maddon extracted a few wins using home field advantages? Don't worry about it, some people find more things unintelligible than others. WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win) Maddon != Gibbons We are also not a small ball team. We didn't just go from 87 projected wins to 90.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 The turf sucks...too much like a football field
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 And now I know WAR is not something used for baking. Excellent. 2-3 WAR is ~0.3 runs per game. That doesn't really pass the sniff test, sorry.
pat_borders Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 It's still a joke. seeing it live, it still looks terrible, at least do what tampa does and throw some dirt in the infield
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Author Posted April 14, 2015 seeing it live, it still looks terrible, at least do what tampa does and throw some dirt in the infield There is no excuse for not having a dirt infield. WTF.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 There is no excuse for not having a dirt infield. WTF. Likely to do with the Argos.
hookminor Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Not a fan of the turf. It seems like there were a few balls that could have/should have been singles, but that turf really seems to slow the ball down and resulted in an out against the Jays.
Bluejays0988 Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Likely to do with the Argos. Has everything to do with the Argos unfortunately, nothing against them at all but they can not get out of the rogers centre quick enough. Also really curious to see what the rogers centre would look like with real grass and a dirt infield if anyone here is good with photoshop. Edit: Nevermind I found one online

Edit: Nevermind I found one online From a viewer standpoint, its more the lack of a dirt infield than the lack of grass that makes the Rogers Centre look so off to me. The new turf looks good enough, even though if it looks like Kermit the Frog's color. Getting the dirt infield in there would be key...but the same issues that prevent them from having grass (being a multi-purpose entertainment center) prevents the dirt infield. I actually dont believe Beeston (shocker) that there will be grass by 2018. He'll be long gone by then, but even if the Guelph University study shows it is feasible, the costs to dig up the concrete, add in the airflow, etc., not to mention the opportunity cost of not being to garner the additional revenue from the motocross/monstertruck/icecapades/circus/whatever the hell else they have in there...I just dont think Rogers will do that. From a baseball standpoint, it makes total sense, but for Rogers' bottom line, it doesnt make dollars.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 From a baseball standpoint, it makes total sense, but for Rogers' bottom line, it doesnt make dollars. It's an investment that could attract more premium free agents by giving them grass and a proper field to play on which in turn could be quite valuable for them.

I see where you're coming from, but thats a very single minded view. Baseball is just one form of revenue (a small one) but all of these events that can be hosted by the Rogers centre offer year round revenue for Rogers. Edit: As much as I would love the rogers centre to have real grass, I do not see a scenario where this happens. I think we would have a new stadium before grass is ever installed in the current one.

It seems like there were a few balls that could have/should have been singles, but that turf really seems to slow the ball down and resulted in an out against the Jays. could have/should have been singles on the "old turf" or on a standard grass infield? Isn't the intent to make it play more like grass (ie, much slower than the old turf)?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 The turf is s***. Our team has home run and doubles power. The homers won't be affected but I think a lot of those drives up the gap with be cut off. You mean in comparison to the teams that have triples and singles power?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Guys like Reyes and Pompey will suffer in terms of bunts. I don't think bunting on this surface will work well. On the other hand, infield hits may be interesting, as well as high choppers.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 not to mention the opportunity cost of not being to garner the additional revenue from the motocross/monstertruck/icecapades/circus/whatever the hell else they have in there... How many events do they even have in the offseason though? The stadium is too big for a lot of things. Right now this is what I see on the schedule for the off-season that isn't an Argo game. October: Taylor Swift November: nothing December: Disney on Ice January: Monster Trucks February. March: nothing That's 3 events total.

Just because they would have grass doesn't mean it couldn't be used for events like concerts, they block the infield and cover the grass. Yes Monster Jam would have to find a new venue. dineke Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 TIL monster trucks is still a thing...
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 what I would like to know is did they know that the turf would play this slow? I sure hope they did not unknowingly get this longer/softer turf and not consider the fact that baseballs don't roll on it. That would show a total lack of planning and foresight. Beeston should answer this question immediately. Hitters will get pissed off, it may cost them 20 or 30 points on their batting averages
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 TIL monster trucks is still a thing... That's because it use to be on TV everyday until a couple of years ago when FOX bought Speed Channel and put Monster Jam on one of their FOX Sports channels that we don't get in Canada. So no one cares anymore.
crazy47larry Verified Member Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 new ballpark changes, new problems, same solution. shave that turf down. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/sharp-rogers-centre-scoreboards-shaved-down-1.533554
